There was screaming, the gunshots had scared a lot of people. The zombie's were at the front gates and as we got there I saw the gate shift back and forth under the weight of the hoard. And hoard was the right term for it. If there weren't metal storage containers pressed against the fences on either side of the gates and down the line, the chain link fence would have given out. I recognized some of the women from team Delta and one man from Charlie along with a few people who had volunteered for guard duty. The man from Charlie was shooting into the hoard of zombies, hitting head shots pretty often. The rest were trying to kill the ones pressed against the chain link with knives.
It didn't seem to make a huge dent, there had to be over a hundred zombies that I can just see from this side of the fence.
"We should have brought molotov's." I tell the guys.
"I can go make some." Lex offers and I shake my head.
"The gate wont last that long." I look over and spot something just inside of one of the open containers, hanging off the side of a table. "Grab that!"
Lex takes off without a second thought and Mato walks to me as Blair go into the fray to help stab zombies through the fence. "I take it you have a idea?"
"The gates going to come down any minute, we need to open it."
Mato actually gapes at me for a second then says. "You want to let them in?"
Lex gets back with the round of rope and I take it from him and look to Mato. "Think you can hold me on your shoulders?"
That earns a raised brow from him. He drops to a knee and I move behind him, with a hand from Lex I manage to sit on his shoulders and I point him to the gate. "I'm going to tie this around the entrance to the gate and the fence, giving it just enough slack for it to open enough for a few zombies to come in at a time."
"Hopefully the gate will hold off that long."
"I'm hoping that by letting some in it'll stop being so hard on the fence." Feeling Mato's hands grip my thighs tightly send a thrill through my body. Yes, even with the moaning snarling zombies his hands almost distract me for a moment. I manage to wrap the rope around the edge of the gate and the edge of the fence, keeping just enough slack. I double knot the ends together, I hoped it hold. I look out to the hoard and swallow back a sense of dread. If all of them got in before we could thin it, we might actually be in trouble. "Okay."
Mato takes a few steps back and drops back down, I didn't need Lex's help to get off of Mato. I move over to the gate and Mato starts to follow. "No, go over with the others, make a line."
"You can't be by the entrance." Mato says arguing with me then I remembered, he didn't know.
"I don't smell like food." I tell him and could see the confusion. "After I was bit I found out I can walk passed zombies, like they didn't know I was food."
"You're just now telling me this?" There is a hint of anger in his voice. Now wasn't the time to unpack this or fight about it.
"I forgot?" I say and shake my head. "I'll open the gate."
The gate and fence was swaying at a dangerous angle, a few of the fighters ready themselves a dozen or so feet away from me. Unlatching the gate and pulling it open as far as the rope will allow one zombie squeezes through the opening past the others. This one completely ignores me because there are moving people just ahead. Another one moves in from the gate and then another. Their slow movements allow Mato, Blair and one of the Delta girls to dispatch them in time for the next. Everyone else was trying to thin the heard through the gate.
