"I'm so excited!" Jane hums tugging at my hair. "It's like prom but for adult people!" I watch her fight with my hair. Two failed attempts at a tutorial, she tries a different style. I wasn't sure how I wanted my hair so I left it up to Jane. "I feel like you're judging me."
"I would never!" I gasp. "I just have no clue what you're doing!"
"Trust the process." She says before glancing at her phone again. "How are you feeling?"
"A little nervous." I admit. "Only because it's a bigger event and Im not use to dressing up so much." I bite my lip.
"At least it's at a bar... right?" She asks. I laugh.
"I'm not getting drunk." I say.
"I'm not saying get shit faced, but let loose." She defends. I shake my head, causing her to glare at me.
"Sorry." I whisper sheepishly. She continues.
"What did you tell Edward about tonight?" She questions.
"I... haven't mentioned it." I state. "It's not like it's his buisness. Plus he said he will be home late today."
"Rosie!" Her voice comes out shocked. "I'm proud of you! And if he does end up asking, tell him to shove it." I roll my eyes. "I'm serious though. I'm proud that you're blossoming into your own person! And that he hasn't gotten into your head again." I purse my lips together.
"I just hope I find some place reasonable sooner than later." I sigh. "So, we aren't telling our parents yet." She pulls my hair making me yelp.
"Why the fuck not?" She asks, her eyes piercing me through the mirror.
"Because its going to be the holidays and they're going to be so disappointed! I'm not ready right this moment but he mentioned after the holiday stress to tell them." I explain.
"HE mentioned waiting so long?" She asks. I stare at her.
"I know what you're thinking-"
"No, he is still messing with you Ro. He wants to wait so he can have time to stall and get into your head. He wants to act good if they visit and make you feel guilty or something! He's manipulating you!" She exclaims. "He'll have you second guess everything so he can continue being a piece of shit!"
"Jane." I mumble. "I'm not ready yet. We are waiting regardless. I'm not sire how long but when I'm ready I'm ready. It's embarrassing coming out of an engagement. They're going to think I messed up." She sighs. "You have no clue how much stress I'm under. Having to deal with him, trying to find a place. I have never been on my own, Jane this is new to me and hard and after what I've been though... you should know it takes time."
"Rosie I'm so sorry, I just want to see you do better for yourself. You've fallen in deep and are trying to find yourself, I get that, but I need to make sure you realize it so you can end it for good." She says softly. She takes a step back from my hair."You got this though. You're strong." I give her a half hearted smile. I know she means well. It's just hard hearing it from the people you love the most.
After an hour passes my dress is on, my make up is perfect, and Jane is digging out my heels. I observe myself in the mirror. I look different, very different than what I've ever looked like. Maybe, it's the small boost of confidence I lacked before? My phone buzzes.
Will: I'm here Sweetheart x
Me: I'll be down in a minute
I slide on the heels as soon as Jane hands them to me.
"He's here." I state nervously. She claps.
"Then let's go!" She gushes. "He's going to cry! You look so beautiful!"
"Oh stop." I shoo. We open the door revealing Edward. I almost jump back, my mouth turning dry. Fuck. His mouth opens, then shuts as he observes us... well me.
"Eddy!" Jane pushes out dryly. He cringes at the nickname. He looks at me again.
"Uh... what are you doing?" He asks. I grab Janes wrist quickly.
"We are leaving." I state. "D-Don't wait up."
"Where are you going?" He doesn't budge. "Dressed like that?" My heart races.
"Out." Jane states. "Now move it."
"A banquet thing for work. All employees are attending." I mumble.
"Ros-" Jane begins.
"A banquet thing wearing that? Seriously?" I tug on my dress looking down at it. "Who are you going with?"
"Myself." I lie. He scoffs.
"Don't fucking lie! There's someone else, isn't there?" He pushes annoyed. I squeeze Janes wrist hard feeling resistance.
"You know what, I AM being escorted." I grit my teeth.
"I knew it!" He growls. "Didn't think I'd find the box of condoms?" The color drains from my face.
"Are you sure one of your sluts didn't bring it?" Jane spits. "Gotta stay safe with you."
"Jane-" I begin.
"I don't use that brand." He states. This need to end!
"Well obviously it's not using them either! The box isn't even open. How can you say they're mine when you know I'm always home and you are always hawking over me? Hm?" I ask.
"If you'll excuse us, we are late." Jane spits yanking me around Edward whom looks shocked. I stumble after her.
"Jane I can see the smoke radiating off of you." I attempt to lighten the mood.
"You shouldn't have told him. Or deal with him!" She groans.
"I did it to myself." I state quietly.
"And you put your foot down yourself too." She states. "and you're working on getting yourself out."
"I love you." I say weakly.
"I love you too, Ro." She says with a sigh. As we approach the door to outside, she pauses, turning to me. "So." She smirks. "You haven't used the condoms?" I feel myself blush. "But you guys have been hav-"
"Not one more word out of you." I mumble and push through the doors. The cold November wind slaps me in the face.
"Ro!" She gasps. She links her arm through mine. I glance around for Will's car. "Shit Ro, a limo?" I look at her, then follow her gaze. I almost gasp seeing Will leaning against a black limo. He notices us and pushes himself off of it. As he makes his way to us, Jane begins pulling me to meet him half way. I can't stop staring at him. His eyes hold mine as we both stop walking. "Close your mouth Will." I break the eye contact only to observe him in his suit. I've seen him in plenty, but he looks perfect. He holds a hand out to me with a shit eating grin. I take it, smiling right back at him.
"You look gorgeous." He murmurs making my heart melt. There is a flash to our side. I glance over to find the culprit. Jane holds her phone up and I register that she took our photo. What a cornball!
"Okay you guys, have fun but behave! Will, I would like her home at a decent hour." She jokes smiling big. "You guys look amazing."
"Thank you Janey." Will smiles. "Hate to say it, but the surprise... it was well worth it." He looks down at me again, his eyes filled with lust. I look down and smile to myself.
"I know she's hot, Will, but at least wait until after the event to mess up my work of art." Jane instructs. I face palm. "I'm serious."
"Bye Jane." I push Will toward the limo.
"Have fun! I love you!" Jane cries. Will opens the door for me to get in. Sliding in I notice a simple set up. The seats are black leather and the bench that goes along side the limo face a mini bar. Under the seats and the mini bar are lights that illuminate a soft blue tone. Will gets in and shuts the door. Once we are on the road he turns to me and smiles.
"Jane really doesn't come with a filter." He laughs. I shake my head chuckling. That's my Jane! "Would you like a glass of wine or if you're feeling up for it, there's champagne."
"Wine is okay." I answer. "Thank you." He pours us both a glass of wine and settles down by me again. I take a few sips before peeking at him.
"You really look amazing." He states looking into my eyes. "As always."
"You look amazing, too." I blush. "As always." He shifts to face me better and grabs my free hand with his.
"Rosie..." His face straightens as he trails off. His eyes immediately leave mine.
"Are you okay?" I ask tilting my head.
"Um yeah?" He states more like a question. Shaking his head, he starts to say something but stops himself. An agonizing expression flashes across his face before he replaces it with a fake smile. "It's nothing."
"Will... you can talk to me, you know." I squeeze his hand.
"I know. You're a great friend." He replies before looking at me again.
Oof. That was a punch to the heart. I'm a great friend. Shit Rosie! I feel as if I'm about to puke. I let out a sound that hopefully sounded like a laugh. He likes me... but we are great friends. I'm head over heels for him, and his date to this banquet, but we are just great friends. Christ we are fucking but we are only great friends. Would he ever see us as more?
"Oh! Before we arrive," He sets his glass down on the mini bar. I set mine down, too. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small rectangular box. "I got you a little something." I stare at the box in his hand. "I know this is cheesy, shoot me." He opens it when I don't move and pulls out a bracelet.
