"Good morning." I say carefully to Maryanne as I walk over to her desk. "I have Mr. Scott's report." I hold up the Manella folder. She stares at me for a moment.
"Mr. Scott is out today." She states with no emotion.
"Well." I sigh. "Are you taking them or should I hold onto it?"
"Hold onto them." She insists. "He might be dropping by after we leave, but chances are slim." I nod, my feet not moving. My nerves are everywhere. "Do you need anything else?" She isn't snarky, but genuine.
"I'd like to finish our conversation." I admit. Finish this and stall seeing Will.
"You can sit down." She offers. I sit down placing the folder on her desk. "Rosie"
"What were you going to say?" I ask. She bites her lip and leans back.
"This is going to suck." She warns. "But you've been helping with buisness blindly."
"What does that mean?" I ask frowning.
" You did a report on Will. Darrin has had you evaluate him." She says.
"I know." I respond confused. She sighs.
"The report was one of the last steps Darrin needed." She says lowly. "He's sending Will to Phoenix. " My face falls.
"He's what?" I ask. This is a joke.
"The plan has been for Will to take over one of the branches. Darrin's father wanted to work with him since he's coming back to help guide him." She says.
"Has been?" I whisper. My mind races.
"Darrin made Will Hr as a trial run to decide if Will was ready. Will knew, but we weren't sure how long he'd be here for." She explains. "Then in came you." I stare at her feeling my heart beat uncontrollably. "Hr rarely has an assistant. Will's job was to train you for the position for when he left."
"What?" I breathe. This has been planned for this long? "A-Are you sure?" This can't be real.
"Yes." She looks sad. "It's been confirmed since Sunday." He's known about it being confirmed since Sunday? Holy shit! Sunday, yesterday, was our fight! Did that influence timing? Did he have a say when he was ready? "I just couldn't believe he was leaving you blindsided. After everything" I push hair out of my face feeling as if I was about to pass out. "After everything with Edward, he led you on. You don't deserve to be hurt anymore than you have been."
"Too late for that." I mumble feeling a tear roll down my cheek. "I'm sorry, I-I have to go." I stand abruptly. "I'm going home."
"Want me to put in sick time?" She asks. I nod quickly. "DO you need a ride?"
"No, thank you." I choke. I pull out my phone.
Me: Jane, I need a ride home.
"You can stay in here if you need a minute." She says lowly. I nod and breathe. "I know you're confused, but like I said, I've been a bitch but, you don't deserve this."
"How long have you known?" I ask holding onto the chair I was just on.
"Darrin mentioned it the night of the banquet. I have to transfer his files over to the phoenix branch." She explains. "I thought you knew." I nod.
"Fran was acting weird." I recall the other night.
"She was there." She says. "She must have hoped that Will would have told you."
Jane: Be there in 5!
"I'm sorry." She sighs. I wave her off.
"This situation isn't your fault. Thanks for telling me." I respond straightening up. I grab the folder from her desk. "I'll uh, see you around." I rush to the elevator and sigh. I wipe my cheek furious with how naïve I am.
