Old Friend
~ Long time, no see? ~Jake
~
If only the crickets were quiet for once, Jake would have slept early after all the walking, convincing, and bickering. Staying up late was not the ideal lifestyle he was aiming for, for the rest of his life. Maybe sleeping pills would have aided him, but his parents are violently against it.
Attempting to let the drowsiness devour him till everything turns black, he twists and turns to find a comfortable position, but his attempts are futile.
The crickets died down a bit, making the process of falling asleep easier for Jake, but the sudden notification on his phone disrupted the process that had almost completed. The temptation to check his phone disturbed him, making him more alert. With all his might, he fought the urge and tried to sleep.
As the night lightens to day, his deafening alarm clock wakes him up. He slams his hand onto it as if it was a normal thing he does every morning before sitting up.
Remembering the notification he received the night before, he searches for his phone and checks. To his surprise, the early bird who barely contacts first texted him pretty late at night.

Sunoo
have you arrived already?
goodnight 😴–
Jake smiles as he reads the messages sent by Sunoo. He wanted to send a few back but ended up staring at the blue line fading in and out, waiting for his fingers to tap on the letters, forming proper sentences back.
To his avail, he sent a simple [Sorry, I fell asleep] and [But, goodmorning :)] within the span of 5 minutes.
Feeling satisfied, he carries himself up and walks to the kitchen. Without his mother in sight, who usually cooks before her son shows up for breakfast, it was lonely and quiet to start the morning.
Jake was only full of gratitude, having in mind that his parents have other things to tend to, just for him to live comfortably.
He made himself an egg sandwich and walked outside to admire the beauty of the garden his parents worked in years before. Tranquillity and collectedness were what he felt, feeling the grass barefoot and taking in the smell of the blooms.
He munches on the last piece of his sandwich and sighs, wishing he felt this peaceful every day. Feeling at ease was a wish he could not fulfil.
Jake walks back in with the fear of freezing to death. While letting the warmth of his home comfort him, he receives a notification, making him pay attention to his phone from the cold.
With his shaky hands, he grabs his phone and reads the message from someone whose number had not been saved in his cell. Surprised with happiness, he dashed to his room and tried to prepare as quickly as he could, not wanting to make his friend wait.
"Long time, no see!"
They had not been in touch for quite a while after parting ways by the time they reached high school. It was nice to see someone dear to you after years of detachment. Both could not help but smile the moment their eyes met.
