sadie was sitting at one of the back tables of the empty cafeteria. she played around with the food on her plate; she wasn't hungry. lately she didn't have any appetite. her never-ending cycle of thoughts clouded every other function in her body.
today marked exactly three months since she and her dad, andy, moved to boston to be closer to jeremiah and susannah while she was undergoing her treatment. it also marked three months since sadie's sister, piper, moved to florence, italy for university.
her new daily dynamic was quite different than it had ever been. their new apartment was much quieter than the house they used to live in, especially without piper to blast her extra loud, extra obnoxious music.
she missed her sister. god, she missed piper more than she missed anything ever. she felt so alone without her sister.
today also marked three months since susannah started her treatment, three months since she and jeremiah officially became boyfriend and girlfriend, and three months since she drank any alcohol.
so, sadie sat at the cafeteria, alone, remembering all of the reasons why today is so important. she cursed her elephant's memory; she cursed her brain for remembering and reminding her of every detail.
why was she like that? she wondered for a moment. why couldn't she be one of those carefree people who weren't in their head all the time?
she wished she could think less. she wished she could spend less time in her head. but her thoughts were stronger; they were consuming and never-ending.
"there you are!" a familiar voice exclaimed. sadie didn't need to turn around to identify the person; it was jeremiah. the fisher boy sat next to her, planting a kiss on her cheek and greeting her with a big flashy smile.
attending the same school as jeremiah was weird. as expected, he was mr. popular. everyone knew and loved him; girls and boys followed him around wanting to be around him and with him at all times.
"hi!" sadie softly let out, smiling back at the boy. her eyes crinkled, her gaze filled with so much adoration and love.
"i have two more periods, and i'm done for today," he informed. "i checked your schedule, and you do too. so i was thinking," he turned around to completely face her, "we can go to the park and chill for a bit. just the two of us. then we can go pick up some food, take it to susannah, and we can wait for andy and then have a family dinner. what do you think?"
she loved him.
sadie was so sure of it. sadie crawford loved jeremiah fisher; she was head over heels in love with him, and she was too scared to tell him. if the crawford girl was honest, she knew she loved jeremiah since she was nine; she just wasn't sure what that feeling was until now.
the fisher boy watched her expectantly, waiting for her answer to his suggestion. "yeah, that works. i love it." somehow his smile widened, his pearly whites blinding her for a moment. she couldn't help but return with the matching expression.
"what are you two up to?" a third voice joined. the scraping of a tray made them look to the opposite side. sitting down was one of jeremiah's friends from middle school, jenny daily.
jeremiah put his hand over sadie's resting on the table, squeezing it in reassurance. "just making plans for later," he told his friend.
the dark-haired girl hummed, putting a bite of food into her mouth while inspecting the pair opposite of her. she noted their joined hands on the table, the lack of space between them, and the unmistakable sparkle in both of their eyes.
"anything special?" she asked after swallowing her bite.
the fisher boy shrugged. "just a little hangout," he said briefly, sending a wink to sadie, which made her giggle. the crawford girl for a moment wondered, since when was she the girl to giggle, to feel so carefree, and more importantly, to fall so deeply in love with someone? sadie knew she was far from an open book; her walls were up, and it was difficult to get to know her.
so, how did jeremiah manage to do it so effortlessly?
the bell rang, echoing around the empty cafeteria, signaling that the lunch break has come to an end. jeremiah turned to his girlfriend and pecked her lips, once and then once more for good measure. "i'll get this." he took her tray once he stood up. "i'll text you during our last period so we can meet up." with that, and another final glance across the room, he was gone.
"hmm," the dark-haired girl made a sound of acknowledgment as she stood up, the crawford girl following her actions. "what is it?" she questioned.
jenny hesitated, her gaze glued to the still swinging door jeremiah just exited through. "i've just..." she paused, her dark eyes locking with sadie's, "i've just never seen him like this."
the crawford girl laughed awkwardly, picking up her bag from the floor. "like what?"
"in love," she said without missing a single beat.
sadie stood there, frozen in her spot. jenny didn't notice; she continued walking, but sadie stayed behind, still processing those two simple words.
in love.
they echoed in her mind, another subject to occupy her thoughts, another thing to mull over to the point of drowning.
in love. in love. in love.
they quieted everything else screaming in her head, because could it really be true? could jeremiah really be in love with her? could his feelings towards her be as strong as her feelings towards him?
a small smile made its way onto sadie's lips. a seed of hope grew in her heart because maybe there really was a future for her and jeremiah.
