"Who's coming over?" I asked. "A friend of mine and his son are coming for dinner so you need to look nice." mom said setting the table.
I ran upstairs and threw on my red mini dress that I had bought for a Christmas party when I was back in North Carolina.
I curled my already wavy blonde hair and put on the gold bracelet Nash had given me for Christmas. On the inside he'd had them in grave 'Purple Hearts Forever Baby'.
I absolutely adored it. I wore it all the time and only took it off to get in the shower. I slipped on a pair of red heels and went back downstairs to help with dinner.
"Don't forget Zoe, I have a doctors appointment tomorrow so you'll be here by yourself most of the day." mom said when I got downstairs. "Okay I'll try to wake up before noon then." I said and she smiled at me.
The doorbell rang as she was setting the food on the table. "Oh and just so you know, your not aloud to get married till I do again." she said. "Mom that could be never." I complained.
"I wouldn't be too sure about that." she said as she opened the door. On the other side stood a man about moms age and a boy about my age maybe a year or two younger. Both men carried flowers.
"You must be Zoe. I've heard much about you." he said and handed me the flowers. "Which means your Delilah." the boy said and handed mom the flowers.
"Thank you Dawson. I've heard lots about you." mom said. Mom invited them both inside. As the man passed her she kissed him on the cheek. "Ew mom your like 50!" I said and pretended to gag.
"Oh shut up girl." she said jokingly. "And pulled that dress down its too short." she said. I pulled it down but it showed about two more inches of my boobs. "Okay pull it back up." she said and laughed.
Mom sat down with the man next to her and me and Dawson on the other side of the table. "Aren't you famous or something?" Dawson asked turning to me. "Ummm I don't think so." I said.
"Yes you are you sing and hang out with those vine guys. I've seen you in some of their vines." He said. "Oh yeah them." I said. "You sing?" The man who's name mom told me later was Devon.
"Uh a little bit." I said and shrugged. "Go ahead and show them." Mom said. I started to sing Let It Go because I loved Idina Menzel.
When I finished they all clapped and I felt my cheeks turn bright red. "That was really good." Dawson said. "Thanks." I said and turned a deeper red. "She doesn't really like singing around people she doesn't know very well." mom said seeing how red I was turning.
My phone buzzed on the table. "Who is it?" Mom asked. "Cameron." I said showing her the screen. His contact picture was me and him laughing at a joke he had told me as I was taking the picture. "Go ahead and answer it but only because I like Cam." she said and smiled at me. I smiled back and picked up the phone.
"What's up kid?" I asked. "When are you getting back we finished moving everything in." He said. "I still have another two weeks till I leave." I said and he sighed. "I know, you love me." I said.
"I do I really do!" He said and I laughed at the voice he said it in. "Put the phone on speaker." he said. I sighed and do as he said.
"Hi Delilah!" He said excitedly once it was on speaker. "Hi Cam." she said laughing. "Is that Zoe?" Nash asked in the back ground. "And Delilah." Cam said.
"Hi Zoe! Hi mom!" Nash yelled. "Hi Nash." we both said. "I have a few questions for you later Nash." Mom said and the phone was silent. Then all we heard was Cameron laughing that maniac laugh of his.
"I'll talk to you guys later were having dinner with my moms friend and his son." I said and out extra emphasis on friend.
Cam laughed and said goodbye before hanging up. "That was interesting." Devon said. "Their interesting people." I said and sat the phone back down.
The rest of the meal we talked about random things like school and jobs and mom announced that her and Devon where getting married.
When we finished dinner me and Dawson went outside. "Follow me." I said. I lead him up into one of the trees me and Nash climbed when we were little.
"I can't believe by the end of next month your gonna be my sister." He said. I laughed as I kicked my shoes to the ground.
"Well at least mom will finally have a reason to finish that spare room next to mine." I said. "I think my dad was planning on us sleeping over tonight but I'll be sleeping in the couch, and he'll be sleeping you-know-where." he said and I cringed.
The next day we sat in a tree in the front yard talking. Mom and Devon went to the doctor and left me and Dawson alone with nothing to do.
We were talking about school and how I was taking it online when he leaned over and put his arm around me. I was getting a little uncomfortable when a car pulled in the driveway.
I was facing away from the road and figured it was mom and her new little boy friend.
"What's up girly?" Matt asked from behind me. I whipped around and saw Matt Cameron Nash and Hayes getting out of a car.
I jumped down from the tree and ran to Nash. I jumped in his arms and he swung me around. "Who's that?" Nash asked when he put me down. "Calm down he's going to be my brother by the end of next month." I said and his eyes grew wide.
"You moms getting married?!" Matt yelled. "Matt quiet down! Mrs Tomas isn't as young as she was when we were 14." I said. He looked next door and cringed.
"What's your name?" Camy asked Dawson. "Dawson. Who are you guys?" He asked. They went around saying their names.
"Why's it so hot?" Hayes asked. "It's Ohio Hayes not Alaska. It's gonna be hot here just like in North Carolina." I said.
Dawson followed us inside and we stood in the living room. "I haven't been here in forever." Nash said looking around. "I was here last week." Matt said.
My phone rang and I picked it up, knowing it was mom." Mmhmm?" I asked as Nash put his arm around me.
"Z, I have to tell you something." mom said and I could tell she had been crying. "What?! What is it?!" I asked frantically. Everyone in the room looked at me concerned except for Dawson who just looked confused.
"The doctor did some annual tests ya know?" She said. "And they diagnosed me with, with cancer. Brain cancer to be exact." she said.
I dropped the phone and stood there frozen for a couple seconds. Then I picked it back up with tears in my eyes. "Mom?" I asked. "Yeah baby?" She asked. "I love you." I said. "I love you too baby." she said and hung up.
I buried my face in Nash's shirt and started sobbing. He rubbed circles in my back and kissed the top of my head as I cried. Instead of leaving like most people would, the rest of the guys sat down and waited for me to stop crying.
"What happened Z?" Hayes asked from the couch. "Mom, mom went to the doctor and, and they said she had brain, brain cancer." I said stuttering every few words.
"Oh my god! Z I'm so sorry!" Matt said and covered his mouth.
When mom got home we all ran out and attacked her with hugs and questions.
Even the guys were crying when they saw the look on her face(Except for Dawson who had stayed by the door for some reason). They truly did care about her and it made me feel good inside to know that mom had tons of people other than me who cared about her.
