"When's Camy getting home?" I whispered. "He should be here any minute." Nash said. The water burned my hands but I had to get the dishes done before the little purple bundle in the playpen woke up.
We had tried to teach her how to speak but she always ignored us. She didn't even pay us any attention when we said her name. It was like she couldn't hear us.
Suddenly the door banged open and Camy came stumbling in. He tripped over the step up from the porch into the house and knocked over a table with a glass vase on it. The vase smacked the ground and shattered.
I dried my hands off and ran to the crib. London slept through it. I let go of a breath I hadn't known I had been holding. "Camy you gotta be more careful." I said. At the sound of my voice London pulled herself up and started crying while she shook the side of her playpen with her little fists.
"That she wakes up to." I mumbled, exasperated. I threw the towel back over by the sink and picked London up. Once she was in my arms she stopped crying. "There's some girl outside looking for you Z." Camy said and went looking for a broom to sweep up the broken vase.
I put London on my hip and held her there. London gurgled and played with my hair between her tiny fingers. I walked outside followed by Nash who was ever curious. A small grey car sat in the driveway beside Nash's jeep and behind my BMW.
"Hey Zoe!" Yelled a high pitched and overly perky voice. The car door swung open and out stepped my worst nightmare. There she stood in all her bleached, spray tanned, silicone glory. "Jessica." I squealed and shot Nash a pleading look before she ran up the driveway to meet us.
"Who knew you would be doing so good by 23." she said in a snotty voice. "21." I corrected. "Right."she said and gave me a fake smile. Her eyes went from me, to Nash's arm that was around my shoulder, to Nash then to London. She seemed to realize there would be no stealing this one from me.
"Come on in." I said. She flashed a fake grin at me before her eyes darted back to Nash. She followed us inside. "Please, have a seat." I said politely. She threw herself down on the couch next to Nash before I could sit there. Nash scooted over and bit and she pretended to not notice.
"So Jessica how have you been?" I asked. "I've been great. What I'm dying to who is who this little cutie is." she said and smiled at London. "This is my daughter London Delilah Grier." I said. London smiled up at me at the sound of her name. "Hey London!" Nash said and grinned at her. She ignored him and he glared at me. I laughed and London giggled.
Jessica was clearly not enjoying herself. "So Nash, I'm a huge fan." She said and lightly rested her hands on his arm. "Oh, um, thanks." He said, clearly uncomfortable. "I'll go get us some drinks." I said and stood up with London. She wiggled around in my arms as I opened the fridge. "I bet your thirsty too aren't you baby?" I said and pulled her sippy cup. out of the fridge. I sat her on the counter and she drank from it as I pulled cups out of the cabinet.
I carried the drinks back out and London crawled behind me, her sippy cup banging on the hardwood floors as she went. "Here." I said and handed Jessica a cup. Nash smiled and took his before taking a small sip of it. "I hear you've been quite busy making music." Jessica said.
"Yes I'm sighed with Island Records, same as my friend Shawn Mendes, who I'm sure you've heard of as well." I said. "I sure have." She said tightly, straining to keep the smile on her face. "How is acting going?" I asked. "Oh it's going." She said. "If you want I could help you out. Ive got a small part in an upcoming movie maybe I could get you a part." I said knowing she sucked at acting.
"Your going to be in a movie?" she asked. "Yeah I'm playing Sydney in Sydney's Story." I said. Her eye twitched like it did back when we where in high school. "And what about after that?" She asked. "I think I'm going to go to college and get my diploma." I said. The smile had gone from her face.
"I should probably be going." She said. "Yes you probably should." I said, my voice dripping with fake sweetness. I led her to the door and slammed it as soon as she was in her car. "You didn't tell her me, Cam, and Orlando Bloom are gonna be in the movie." Nash said with a smile. "I didn't think her heart could take it." I said and we both started laughing as we went back into the living room with London.
