I stared at the girl sitting next to me, she seemed irritated to say the least but her attitude didn't detract from her beauty. Her long blonde hair cascaded over her shoulders in gentle subtle waves. And her eyes were the most beautiful shade of ocean blue, Ellianna Wesbrook was gorgeous there was no denying it. I nudged her arm a bit and smiled. "Looks like we're gonna be lab partners all year."She scowled at me. "No way, I need a good grade In this class, I'm asking for a seat change as soon as class is over," she said. Little did she know I had won the Mississippi science decathlon last year as a freshman.
"What you don't think I'm smart enough to help you get a good grade?" I asked her, making sure I used my charming smirk all the girls loved. She scoffed. "I've known Matt Sanchez and all of his friends since I was like 5, and I know none of them to care about grades. All they care about is football and video games. I'm guessing you're no different." I was trying my best not to get angry with her, but she didn't even know me, so why was she judging so hard?
"Listen, Elli, you don't know this-" she cut me off. "My name is Ellianna." she deadpanned. I was taken aback a bit. "Yeah I know, I just thought Elli was a cute nickname." She started standing up and pushed her chair in.
"What are you doing?" I asked. She looked down at me. "I'm going to get my seat changed," she said as she turned and headed toward the teacher's desk. And I have to say the view of her from the back was just as good as it was from the front.
There was something different about Ellianna Wesbrook, she wasn't like any other girl I had met. Girls loved me, they worshiped me, I was good-looking, smart, and talented on the football field. But Ellianna didn't care about any of that, and if she did she wasn't showing it. She turned around from Mrs. Andrews's desk scowling. If she was that pretty scowling, I wonder what she looked like smiling. I wanted to make her smile, I wanted her to like me. Every girl liked me.
"How did it go?" I asked her as she pulled out her chair and plopped into it angrily. "How do you think?" she said sarcastically all the while giving me a death glare with her beautiful blue eyes.
"Well Elli, I guess you're stuck with me all year," I told her smiling. "I told you not to call me Elli," she said again firmly. This girl wasn't ever gonna crack. After that, I didn't say anything and neither did she, we just stared off in different directions until our teacher started speaking, already teaching a lesson in ionic and covalent bonds which I already knew about. So I busted out my playbook to review instead.
I worked my ass off all last year at my old school trying to prove myself. This year I had the opportunity to start on varsity as a sophomore. I wasn't going to fuck it up. Football was my future, my way out and I was going to show this school how good I was. Sure they had a losing record for the past 10 years, but a new quarterback can change a lot, and I was determined to make this team a winning one. Just like I was now determined to make the girl next to me like me as well.
Class drowned on and ended with Mrs.Andrews making Ellianna the happiest girl on the planet. "Alright class to start the year We will do an independent study project on ionic and covalent bonds so that you all can form a bond with your new lab partner." Ellianna groaned, and I just shrugged my shoulders. Sounded like busy work to me.
Mrs.Andrews drones on with the details of the project. "The project will consist of a written paper as well as a model of an ionic and covalent bond." I turned to face Ellianna. Who looked like she was freaking out.
"Well, this should be easy," I said, as I leaned back in my chair and stuck my pencil in my mouth.
"Yeah I'm sure you know so much about bonds, and I bet you are very talented in the arts and crafts department as well. So yeah it'll be a breeze." Ellianna shot back at me, slightly panicked and slightly sarcastic.
"Relax Elli, just because I play football doesn't mean I'm an idiot, you know smart people can play sports too," I smirked at her hoping id get at least a smile from the girl.
"Yeah, but there is nothing that leads me to believe you have an ounce of intelligence in you. You didn't pay attention all class, all you care about is football." I wasn't going to argue with her, I would just let her be right, she would figure out soon enough there was more to me than just football. I reached for her I phone that was on her side of the desk, she reached back for it but I was too fast.
"What do you think you're doing." She demanded. I unlocked her phone which had no passcode and put my number in.
"Elli I've gotta have your number if we're gonna study today after school," I told her sweetly, her cheeks turned red. Not in a cute blushy kind of way but in a steam coming out of her ears kind of way.
"I told you not to call me Elli," she told me again, and I swear that time was an accident.
"Sorry, I won't call you that again." she looked at me a bit taken aback that I apologized to her.
"so when do you wanna study?" she asked me, still no smile, but a little less defensive. I took a deep breath.
"I drove here, so wanna go home with me after school, we can study at my house." she stared at me and thought about it. Her blue eyes filled with concern.
"You have your license already?" she asked me, I beamed there were a few perks of being the oldest in your grade.
"Yep, my birthday is in August I turned 16 like 3 weeks ago." I smiled proudly knowing I was one of only a handful of kids in our grade with a driver's license and a car.
"Okay meet me outside, after school and then we can go to your house," she told me, and I think this was the first time she wasn't hostile toward me. She went back to writing something in her notebook then I remembered something.
"Ellianna, I have football practice after school." she looked up at me annoyed. "Of course you do, fine, I'll wait in the library text me when you're out of practice." I nodded my head as the bell rang. She packed up her stuff as did I.
"Okay see you after school," I told her but when I looked up she was already gone and walking out the door.
