"Any good news?" Carina asked upon entering the camp on the mountain. Roman flanking her right while Blaise strutted on her left, upon arriving at Clach Dhubh, at the Healer's clinic to be more specific, the latter joined them in their rounds to report his recent findings while enjoying what the city has to offer. The Aurors and Moody greeted her with a bow before the latter answered her question with a grunt.
Moody was never the most cooperative man nor was the most pleasant, she's met him several times in her life; the first few were when he and her grandfather, Ned, would have a drink in the Goldsteins Estate. Children were scared of him and his magical eye, but she and Maisie found it fascinating, along with his sailor's mouth and sour attitude. The next few times she met him was during her later teen years when she and Regulus would visit the Ministry, one of which she witnessed him being sacked for his attitude and the accusation of harming one of his own Aurors on purpose – not all true, he harmed the Auror because that Auror was doing shady work— and was storming out of the Ministry only to be approached by Theodore and offered him a place in Clach Dhubh as the commander of the Aurors. One of the reasons why the Ministry despised the former duke.
Now, here he was. Still not the most cooperative man nor the most pleasant, but Carina would rather have tea with Alastor Moody any time of the day than the Lairds who refuse to leave their camps. Or the Notts of Thorn Hill. She'll just have to find a way to make a working relationship with Mad-Eye. One where they both are happy in the end. After all, one of the things she had to thank her grandmother –even when she did not want to admit – is learning how to engage with a man. Feeding their ego was one, but not too much where they would step on you.
Men are simpler creatures, said the Dowager when she had her first season in one of her forced lessons with her. Dogs more like, give them a bone and they do whatever you want; women on the hand are far more complicated. See us as a hundred-headed hydra, you never know which you are speaking to and if they are telling the truth. She never took those words to heart, not entirely. Carina believed that all people were many-headed hydras with loyalties of their own, mostly to themselves.
"Your visit earlier," Mad-Eye winced, massaging his thigh that rests on the iron leg. It was cold, and she could only imagine the pain he was in, yet he refused to sit, "sent about a dozen men home. All branded as traitors by their Lairds. The werewolves included."
"You don't sound pleased," Carina leaned on the table, observing the commander.
"They should have been punished for taking arms."
"They were forced to take arms by their lairds, their livelihood and families are threatened if they do not do as they were told."
"And you know this how?"
Blaise smirked at her way.
She shrugged. "I have my sources. I'll be having the meeting in Thistle Hall to see to the Lairds, have them pledge their allegiances, and then appoint new Lairds or Ladies to Murrey and MacDonald lands."
"And the Notts of Thorn Hill, what are you going to do with them?" Moody grunted. His leg was hurting badly.
Knowing that he won't sit, Carina was the first to do so, taking the chair by the table where tea was prepared with food. She called for Mad-Eye to join her, claiming that her feet needed a rest even when she was completely fine. The man did and a sigh of relief left his lips. She glanced at Roman's way and gave him a pointed look to stop his and Blaise's smirking, and the giving of bet money – whatever it was they wagered on.
After placing a ward to keep their voices from being carried to uninvited, listening ears, Carina said, "Cantankerus Nott's trial is still on going, along with the others involved in the conspiracy to remove the Warlock. Theodore did his job well by presenting evidence to give them a slim chance of getting out."
