"so, what's Conrads deal?" Katie asked both belly and Jeremiah as they laid on their towels in the sand.

Jeremiah sighed shrugging his shoulders at the girls. "I wish I knew." he said, "he's been acting like this for a few months now. no one knows why, but no one exactly likes it either."

belly crossed her arms. "at least he said hi to you. the first thing he said to me was that he liked me better with glasses, then they all belly flopped me."

Katie groaned. "I missed the belly flop?!" she complained, a dash of realization coming across her. "wait, I mentioned the glasses thing too. sorry bells."

"don't worry about it, you made it a joke. he was just being a dick."

the trio sat on the beach for a little while longer before starting to head back to the house. it was past sunset so the bon fire would be starting soon, meaning Katie and Jeremiah had to start getting ready.

when they got back, the delicious smell of Susannah's cooking filled their noses. "last one there has to sit next to Steven." Jeremiah said, running towards the house. both girls did the same, eventually causing the boy to lose. "you two suck." he complained.

"you three smell salty." Laurel joked, smelling the ocean's water on them from their swim. "Susannah made shrimp and veggies, so everyone better eat up."

everyone sat in their usually seats, trying to ignore the empty seat across from Laurel that was meant for Christine, Katies mother. everyone was silent as they ate, up until Laurel began to scold Steven for having his phone out.

"Steven, I swear to god if you look at that phone one more time I'm putting it in the screen basket." laurel warned.

susannah smiled and took a sip of her wine. "its just that, we want to see your beautiful faces." she said in a nicer tone than laurel. "can dinner be a screen free zone? like the olden days?"

both moms laughed, watching as Jeremiah grabbed Steves phone and threw it towards the screen basket as if it were a basketball.

"dude are you kidding me?!" Steven complained.

"Boom! nailed it!"

Katie laughed as Steven complained and said jere only did it because he wanted to show off that he'd been working out. if he had Jeremiahs body, they all knew he would've done the same.

belly was laughing as well. "your just jealous because jere has a better body than you."

"uh, no." Steven rebutted. "its all about the lean look now. otherwise, you can't wear tailored suits."

Conrad let out a small laugh, looking at Steven as if he were an idiot. "tailored suits." he repeated.

Steven nodded, looking back at him. "yeah man." he said with a smirk. "so, when are you leaving for training camp?"

the room grew deathly silent for a moment.

"uh.. he quit football actually." Jeremiah answered for him.

Katie turned and looked at Conrad with wide eyes. his blue eyes met hers, neither of their facial expressions changing. "and I thought Jere having muscles was going to be the Jurassic change of the summer.." she said in pure shock. "I thought you loved football, what happened?"

"look, I'm not changing my mind." he said plainly. "I was only going to sit the bench all season anyways."

Susannah let out a sigh, her face brightening when a though came to mind. "hang on. belly and Katie, I have a surprise for you!"

the two girls looked at each other nervously as Susannah handed the both of them white envelopes with fancy handwriting on them.

"I was able to wrangle you two invitations to be debutantes!" susannah said.
