the following morning, Katie was walking out of the bathroom after a refreshing shower. her hair was wrapped up in a towel while another one covered her body. to her surprise, Jeremiah was walking out of his bedroom door at the same time she walked out of the bathroom.

"good morning Katie." he laughed, almost bumping into her on accident, "are you ready to dominate in this volleyball tournament?"

Katie smirked, holding the towel around her body. the last thing she needed was for it to fall. "oh, you bet your ass I'm ready" Katie said, "we are going to win it all."

"you guys don't stand a chance against Shayla and I." Steven said as he pushed past the two, hurrying into the bathroom. it only took him about five seconds to complain. "Katie!" he shouted

the girl groaned and turned to look at the door. when it opened, Steven was holding a wad of golden blonde hair. "I swear to god If you leave your spaghetti string hair on that shower wall one more time-"

"oh calm down, hair net." Katie teased, "Surprised you're not wearing one now."

Steven groaned. "if you keep up with the hair in the shower I'm gonna make you wear one too." he said, showing the hair at her, "if I see it again I'm leaving it on your pillow!"

when he slammed the door shut, earning a shout from Katie. "Asshole!"

Jeremiah just laughed, pulling his volleyball tournament tee on. it was a white shirt with hot pink sleeves, the words "team Katie" printed on the back. "team Jeremiah" would've been the name since he had technically won the rock-paper-scissors game, but it was too long to fit.

"Katie, wait!" susannah said, seeing that Katie was walking out of her room in her tournament shirt. "its your turn for the portrait!"

Katie didn't want to do it, but for everything Susannahs done for her, its only fair. "do I have to wear anything specific?" she asked, not wanting to change out of her clothes.

susannah nodded, handing her a plastic bag with clothes. "its nothing crazy, don't worry." she assured her, "meet me down by the beach. keep your hair down and bring a surfboard."

a few minutes later, Katie was looking at the outfit susannah gave her to wear. it was a blue and coral colored long sleeve swimsuit that fit her nicely, and looked good when her hair was down. she knew susannah didn't like to be kept waiting, so she hurried down to the beach, grabbing her board on the way.

susannah had Katie standing with her back to the water, holding her surfboard beside her. "you've always had a connection with the beach you know." susannah said with a smile, looking over at Katie every few seconds as she painted.

"you think?" Katie asked.

susannah nodded. "you and your mom always went down to the beach as soon as you got here every summer. even when you were an infant, she would bring you to the water and dip you in." she began, smiling at the memory, "trust me when I say this, you were the happiest baby I knew. jere, Steven, and belly weren't big fans of the beach when they were babies. only you and connie."

Katie smiled, thinking about how that impacted them today. it made sense, her and Conrad were always down at the beach swimming or surfing, more than the others at least.

"actually, you know that surfboard used to be your mothers." susannah said, pointing to the baby blue board. "when we were your age, your mom, laurel, and I would come down here every summer. your mom felt bad about using my older sisters board so she saved up one year and bought her own."

Katie slid her hand over the deck of the board, smiling to herself. "how come I didn't know that?" she asked.

susannah shrugged. "I don't really know, it just never really came up I guess." she said, "you look like your mom when we were your age. the only difference is that your hair is curlier and you are a little taller than she was."
