I never really was made to be in Abnegation. I didn't ever fit in. All of the selflessness - I just couldn't do it. I couldn't forget myself in a matter of seconds then turn to another in need. I always thought of myself and what I would be like when I was older. Would I live in Abnegation? Could I learn to forget myself eventually? No. It just wouldn't happen. Life is never that easy in Abnegation, for me, at least.

It's Choosing Day and the streets are buzzing with life. Crowds of red, orange, blue, white and grey surround me. I'm in my usual loose, grey dress and grey pumps. I blend into the crowd on days like this. Even though people are excited, the nerves take over eventually. I'm not as nervous as I was when I woke up, but those nerves are only the beginning. We are ordered into our usual lines facing the hub. This is where our life is changed for the better of good or bad. One choice. That's all we get. Make a wrong turn - you can't go back.

I hear the sound of a train behind me. I turn around and look at the tracks where the sound is coming from. After a few seconds, the sound becomes visual. The train. The train that Dauntless members jump on and off every single day. As I look at the train a little longer I can see the people jumping and rolling off of it. They come crashing down to the ground like a wave hitting the shore. As they enter, the sound of their footsteps and shouting gradually gets quieter and quieter. Once the Dauntless have entered, the rest of us hesitantly walk inside. After traveling along a slim corridor, a door is opened to the assembly area where the ceremony is being held. We take our seats in our section, along with the other Abnegation, and wait for the ceremony to start.

After Marcus Eaton, our faction representative, says his usual speech, Jeanine Matthews, leader of Erudite, holds her speech of how and why the factions were created, ending it with the motto 'faction before blood'. Then it all begins... After about two hours of sitting and watching people both leaving and staying in their factions, my name is called out: 'Eleanor Banks.' After breathing in and out a few times, I stand. I walk down the steps and across the room to the stage. I climb onto the platform and walk to the center of it where five white bowls are sat on a table. I look over them and see that each of them is filled with something to represent one of the factions. The first one is filled with broken glass - Candor. The second almost overflowing with water - Erudite. The next, earth - Amity. Then my eyes stop on the next bowl.

Grey stones - obviously Abnegation. I look right a little and see flames flickering over the top of the lit coals. Dauntless. I pick up the knife placed on the table and make a small cut across my palm. After placing the knife back down, my eyes, once again, scan across the five bowls. What am I? I stare at the two bowls in front of me. I thought this would be easy. I know my answer. Why can't I decide? I let my hand hover above one of the bowls. One choice, that's all you get. No going back. I sigh and turn my hand so the cut faces downwards. I scrunch my hand into a fist and let a single drop of blood escape my body. I hear a sizzling sound and a voice calls out 'Dauntless!'. I step off the stage and walk over to the other Dauntless members. A boy about a year older than me is standing up in front of his seat. I walk over to him and he smiles then gestures for me to sit down. I happily accept his offer and he lightly smacks me on the back. 'Welcome to Dauntless.' After saying that, he walks away and stands amongst a group of boys in the corner of the room.
