I awake to the odd sound of silence, and a weird odour that smells familiarly as bleach.
My first thoughts are: Where the hell am I?
A dark room, like all other rooms in Dauntless, with nothing on the walls, and almost empty.
Except for me.
I take a second glance and see another figure, slumped in an armchair in the corner of the room.
And him.
My sight is blurry so, at first, I can't see who it is. I stop myself from calling out his name - what if it isn't him?
No piercings, no tattoos; no anything to show that it is him.
Who is it then?
'Lana?' The person calls out; I recognise the voice.
They walk to my side and cup my head in their hand, 'Hey, you awake?'
I definitely recognise him.
Opening and closing my eyes, I finally see who it is.
'Jay...?'
He turns his head to the side, linking my eyes with his, 'Yeah...?'
I scrunch my eyes shut - Oh god. Oh god.
'Are you not happy to see me?' Jay whispers in a soothing voice; with a croak that almost hides his sleepiness.
'I-It's not that I-' My voice breaks off, and my mind immediately thinks the worst.
It wasn't Eric.
'You what?' Jay's hand is soft against my cheek, rubbing circles that almost make me dizzy.
The movement stops.
'Oh Lana,' Jay looks at me sympathetically, 'This is about the fight, isn't it? I shouldn't have been so stupid.'
'No Jay i-'
'I'm sorry,' he looks into my eyes, 'I fought you like you were just someone to be beaten. Like you were just an obstacle in my way-'
I open my mouth to speak, but he rubs my bottom lip with his thumb and it, instead, comes out as a sigh.
'I'm your friend;' his face contorts, 'I shouldn't have done that. Again, I'm sorry, I-'
'-Jay,' I whisper, and his eyes envelop mine, 'It's okay.'
His pained look slowly turns into a smile, and I smile too - until regret sets in.
Eric isn't here. It wasn't him.
Or was it?
'What's wrong?' Jay asks, concern laced in his voice.
'Nothing,' I pause, 'I'm just confused...'
'Yeah...' Jay leads me on.
'I went unconscious, and then once I woke up - I was here,' Jay nods, 'How, exactly, did I get here?'
'Ah, funny story,' Jay grins, 'You wouldn't believe it.'
I raise an eyebrow, 'Try me.'
'Okay,' he laughs, 'Well, after you fell unconscious, I offered to take you to the infirmary - here, where you are now.
'But Eric turned my offer down and just picked you up and took off down the hall with you in his arms, leaving everyone astounded - including me, to be honest.'
So it was Eric who brought me here. Thank god.
'Well, I would be too, if I was conscious...' I offer, and Jay rolls his eyes.
'Yeah, yeah, how much longer are you going to punish me for that?' Jay grins.
'Hmm,' I say thoughtfully, 'I'll have to think about it.'
Jay laughs, and I join in with him, then I realise something and ask, 'Why are you still here?'
His smile falters, 'I couldn't leave you all alone, could I?'
'How long have you been here?' I question.
'What's with all the questions?'
'Don't answer my question with a question,' I scold, asking once more, 'How long have you been here?'
He sighs in defeat, 'Since this morning.'
'Has training been cancelled, or something?'
'So many questions,' he mumbles under his breath, and I smile, then he continues to answer, 'No. After Eric took you here, Four sent us out - told us we would do something later.'
'Like?' I ask, and he smirks.
'Dauntless games.'
Before I can ask what he means, a woman walks into the room, wearing usual Dauntless attire.
'Oh, excuse me,' she says sweetly, 'Am I interrupting something?'
Before I can speak, Jay does - 'No, please - continue.'
The woman smiles at Jay, before looking to me, 'You should be all healed up now, you can go back into your dorm. If you feel any sorts of pain, just take one of these,' she passes me a box of painkillers, 'With a cup of water. If the pain consistently occurs, just come find me - I'll be here.'
'Thank you,' I smile, 'And I will.'
'Alright.' She says, before walking out of the room.
'Well,' Jay says, 'You wanna head back?'
'Yeah,' I smile, stepping out from under the covers, 'Let's head back.'

The walk from the infirmary to the dormitory was quick and painless - looks like I won't be needing those painkillers.
I place the box of meds under my bunk, before taking a seat on my bed.
I sit in silence for a bit, before I turn my head to see Jay, arms around the bunk bed, half asleep.
'Jay.' I mutter, and his eyes flutter open.
'Yeah? What's wrong? You in pain?'
'No,' I smile at his concerned state, 'You're falling asleep stood up.'
His eyes widen, 'O-Oh that, ugh,' He rubs the back of his neck, 'I-'
'It's fine,' I cut him off, patting the space beside me, 'Here - come sit.'
He carefully sits down beside me, and I laugh.
'What?' He asks.
'Nothing,' I laugh again, 'Just you - you look so uncomfortable, and you were being so careful. It's just a bed.'
He smiles, 'Yeah...'
'Come on,' I lay down, 'Stop being so awkward and lay with me.'
Eventually, he does, and we both lay next to each other, looking up at the bunk above us.
I turn onto my side and look at Jay, his eyes droopy as he takes long blinks.
'Jay,' I mutter, and he turns on his side, facing me, 'Go to sleep - it's fine. You're okay.'
He smiles lazily, before accepting my offer, 'Alright. Not for long though.'
He shuts his eyes and I wrap my arms around him, placing my head on his warm chest.
He looks at me and I eye him, 'Go to sleep.'
He smiles, muttering an 'Okay' before wrapping a protective arm around my shoulder and the other over my arms on his chest.
His heartbeat slows and his breaths become even as he falls to sleep. I focus on his heartbeat and breathe his breaths until, I too fall asleep next to him.
