Of course, this had to happen to her. She had to be raised by a bounty hunter, she had to learn how to survive in the wild, she had to learn to act like a lady, and she had to be the one in an arranged marriage with the prince.
Sitting in a tree in the forest next to her town, she was sharpening a branch she had broken off, sighing about her life. 'For safety' her father had told her. 'I won't be here to help you stay safe forever.' Safe from what? Deer? River Banks? She'd taken care of herself against goblins and bears, what was there to be safe from?
Sure any girl would be overjoyed to marry Prince Shoto, except that Toshiko didn't want to be royalty. With their stupid uncomfortable gowns, and stupid posture, and dumb rules that wouldn't let her leave the castle without at least 5 guards following her. Even now she could see the 2 that were hiding behind trees, making sure she'd stay safe.
Toshiko sighed and leaned her head against the tree trunk, turning her head in their direction. "I know you're there. It's stupid to hide." Both guards came out from their spots and approached her closer. "Ma'am, we were given orders from the king to keep an eye on you-" One of them started, the one with blue hair and extremely great posture, looking ready to take orders at any second. The one she had met before he even became a guard for the royal family.
"Iida please don't call me ma'am." The guard, Iida, sighed and cleared his throat. "Toshiko. We were given orders to keep an eye on you to ensure your safety." Toshiko rolled her eyes and continued sharpening her stick. "I know. I was there. But I'm not in any danger. I'm literally right next to the town and if I were to simply yell, I'd be able to fight off attackers long enough for a person in that nearby house and shop to come over," she explained, pointing to where she was talking about, "So please, just go back to doing guard duties like patrolling the city and collecting taxes or something." The second guard that had been present finally spoke up, telling her, "Actually, knights don't collect taxes.." His voice trailed off as Toshiko groaned and hung upside down from her branch. "I don't careeeee. Just leave me alone for once."
When Iida was about to speak again a voice stopped him, coming in the direction of the village, along with footsteps, getting closer. "Leave for now. I want to talk to her." They all turned their heads to see the prince, walking towards them in what was, as far as Toshiko knew, a very formal yet impatient manner. The second guard that was there went to talk, "Sir, we were just informing her that she was being unsafe and could cut herself with the knife or fall from the branch."
Prince Shoto reached where they were all standing and leaned against the tree. Toshiko immediately sat up, thinking it rude to act like a normal human being around him. The prince shrugged and waved his hand, almost in a 'shoo' like motion. The guards immediately turned and walked back towards the castle. Or did they march? She couldn't tell.
Once the two guards were gone, the prince turned and climbed into the tree, sitting on a branch almost next to hers. "So," he started, only he didn't continue. "So... You said you wanted to talk to me?" Shoto leaned onto his left arm, almost in a relaxed position. "Was it your idea to ask to marry me or your parents?"
Toshiko was taken back from the question being asked. Was she supposed to answer honestly? Would he be uncomfortable if she lied? Barely thinking of saying her answer respectfully she stammered out the truth, praying she didn't get killed for being rude. "U-uhh I don't want to marry you, my parents set it up." She had expected the prince to look upset at her words or even mad but he surprised her when he let out a laugh and sat up. "I assumed so. Considering you and I have only met once or twice when the marriage was being talked about and you didn't want to speak with me when invited to have lunch and get to know each other."
She was shocked that the prince didn't seem upset while talking. He sounded like a normal guy, the kind she'd see hanging out around her village everyday. "Don't get me wrong, I'll still marry you, i mean I kind of have to anyway, but I just don't really want to." The prince shrugged while responding, "Me too. You seem like a nice person and I'd be fine marrying you, I just don't want to get married in general."
"Is that the only reason you came to talk to me? Just to talk about how we don't really want to get married?"
Shoto shrugged and reached into a pocket, pulling out a piece of paper and handing it to her. He leaned back and forward, looking around to make sure no one was listening in. He leaned closer to her and she opened the map. "If you don't want to go through with the marriage, I've marked a place on this map. I know some people who will be there in about 2 weeks who are happy to let you travel with them for however long you want. You don't have to if you don't want to, but if you decided to, I'll cover for you."
With that, the prince jumped down from the tree and turned around, holding his hand out to help her climb down. Toshiko looked around before shoving the map into the small bag she carried with her along with her knife and tossed the stick behind her. She then took Shoto's hand and climbed out of the tree. They both walked back to the village in silence, having nothing to say either way. When they decided to part ways, Shoto gave a fairly formal bow before Toshiko did a very awkward curtsy and then walked in the direction of the home she lived in.
At least she knew how to get out of her marriage now.
