The phone dropped from Toshiko's hands the second after the words left Midoriya's mouth.

"Our person inside has informed us..... Kachaan is dead."

She backed away from the phone until she eventually hit the wall of the hallway. Of course, they both knew that being a hero was dangerous and they had plans if one of them were to die in battle, but she had never thought that they'd ever have to use them.

"Mom?" Hanasu stood from her room looking at her mother staring at the ground with tears welling in her eyes. Slowly approaching her, Hanasu made her way to her mom and looked back at her phone on the ground. Picking it up, she saw that Deku was still on the line.

"Deku? Is everything okay? Mom is crying."

She heard him take a deep breath ready to deliver the news, only for Toshiko to call her over. Taking the phone and giving Deku a quiet thank you, Toshiko hung up and sat on the couch, followed by Hanasu.

"Hana... he's gone. Your dad is gone." Hanasu could feel something in her shatter. Her mom was officially crying. She didn't sob but her tears were there. Hanasu however, couldn't believe what she was told. It was impossible to be true. Her dad was probably the strongest person out there, there's no way he could be dead.

Toshiko knew that Hanasu was just like her father, not showing her emotions but having them. Hugging her daughter, Toshiko didn't have anything to say. She was curious to see what the news said about it, or if they even knew, but chances are that they did.

But for now, Toshiko and Hanasu sat in their living room, hugging and silently crying.

1 weeks after death

They did hold a funeral for the explosion hero. Toshiko stood and watched as they lowered him to the ground. She hates this dress, so much she'd probably burn it later. And the black veil too. Hanasu stood next to her in the dress her mom had asked her to wear. Just once, once was all she asked for.

While driving home, Toshiko looked at Hanasu sitting in the back seat, looking at her hands in her lap. She was so quiet, it wasn't something a child of Katsuki would normally do. "We should go home and burn these dresses," Toshiko said, hoping to make her laugh, only for a small sad smile to appear on her face.

"Look," Toshiko paused to sigh, "I know, it's hard right now. And it never really does get better, but we're going to promise that we'll be there for each other, okay? Things will get easier. I know that."

Hanasu nodded. "Okay. I promise. So.. speaking of being there for each other, it would be a good way to be there for me if my allowance was raised~" ''Haha, yeah no."

3 months after death

Raising an 8-year-old girl by herself wasn't too hard. Of course, now she had to let her have more sleepovers and babysitters because of work, but at least she was getting the hang of it. As Hanasu was planning her 9th birthday with her friends over the phone, Toshiko was making dinner.

After washing her hands, she took out bowls for two and served the food to them both. She went to put them on the table only to remember the placemats were in the closet. She passed Hanasu as she mentioned a bounce castle and opened the closet door. Once she located the mats, she went to close the closet, when her eyes glanced up at the unopened gifts sitting on a shelf in the corner.

When Katsuki passed away, it was 3 weeks until Christmas. He never got to open them. Toshiko just didn't have the heart to send them back, so they were going to stay here in a closet for probably the rest of forever.

Once dinner was finally set, Toshiko told Hanasu to get off the phone to which she reluctantly said bye to her friends and sat at the table. While they ate, Toshiko asked how school had been what classes she needed help with, and if science was getting easier to understand or not. While dinner was being cleaned up, Toshiko asked if Hanasu would be okay to finish up while she used the restroom.
