Kate's stomach had been churning for the past three days.
First of all, it had been an innocent stomach ache (or so she thought), but recently it was from nerves. She had checked her calendar, which she scribbled in her diary. Indeed, when you compared the last date which had been written... it was over a month and a half ago. There was a great chance that she could be pregnant.
She hadn't dared tell Anthony yet, because she was dreading that if she told him and then bled the next day, he would be heartbroken - as would she. Kate was not always regular. Sometimes a month and a half passed between periods. However, the past year they had seemed to even out. In fact, she hadn't been late at all since being married to Anthony.
She twirled a strand of hair around her finger (a nervous habit) whilst trying to listen to what Daphne was trying to tell her about Augie.
"Kate, I do not think you are listening," Daphne said, a trace of laughter in her voice.
"Apologies," Kate rushed to say, not wishing to offend her sister-in-law. "My mind has been elsewhere lately."
"I can tell. And so can Anthony. He's been dreadfully worried about you."
"He has?" Kate felt awful. She didn't wish for Anthony to worry about her, did not mean to scare him.
"Yes. He believes he has done something to upset you. Has he?"
"No, not at all!" Kate pressed the back of her gloved hand to her forehead, suddenly feeling hot. "I just haven't been feeling well. I do not want him to believe he has done anything. That's the last thing I want."
Daphne nodded. "I see."
She seemed awfully suspicious. Kate met her eyes, and Daphne seemed so understanding and sincere that she felt the sudden urge to spill the entirety of what was on her mind, whilst somebody trustworthy was there to listen. If anyone could give her advice, it would be Daphne.
"You can talk to me, Kate."
Kate made up her mind. "You see... I believe I may be pregnant."
Daphne gasped, her eyes lighting up. "Oh, that's wonderful!" She grabbed Kate's hands and pulled her outside, next to the flower beds. The sun was beginning to set behind the clouds, and the temperature was perfect for a relaxing walk. It was exactly what Kate needed to settle her stomach.
"May I ask why you haven't told Anthony? He would be over the moon."
"Because I never bleed regularly. I fear that I will tell him, and then it will turn out to be untrue."
"You would go a month and a half between?"
"Well, perhaps not that long..." Kate mused. She clasped her hands together, avoiding eye contact.
"Are you scared?" Daphne whispered.
"Perhaps a little." Kate gulped at this admission.
"Oh, Kate." Daphne drew her into a hug. "You needn't be. If you haven't gone this long before, I do believe you are with child. Promise me you will tell Anthony by the end of the week?"
Kate felt tears rise to her eyes. "I will. In fact, it is nearly two months. I just do not want to disappoint anybody by being wrong about this-"
Daphne grabbed her hands in hers. "Kate. If it has been almost two months, and you have been feeling nauseous for how long?"
"I suppose it started..." she calculated quickly in her head, "about two weeks ago."
Daphne let out a long breath, a smile spreading across her features. "I do believe you have your answer."
