note: This is a reimagined Kanthony scene in the study, where Daphne doesn't interrupt so early... Need I say any more?

-----------------------

"Why is it," Anthony cried, advancing toward Kate. "Why is it, that you dislike me so?"

The rapidly decreasing space between them was making Kate feel even more nervous. They were in his office; she had followed him there after their dance, and now she was thinking it had been a rather bad idea.

"Because..." Traitorous thoughts flowed freely through her brain. Because you plague my dreams, my thoughts; because I wish you did not have such an effect on me... In the end, she bit out the only stupid excuse she could think of. "Because you vex me."

He stared at her, obviously unsatisfied. "And what is it, that you think you do to me?"

He was close now. So close that if she wanted to, she could grab him by the lapels of his jacket and drag his mouth to hers.

It was oh, so tempting.

She had never thought that way before. Never in her life had she been clutched by such desire for a man. It was just her luck that this was the man who made her feel like it. A rake. A rake who, she had to fiercely remind herself, was courting her sister.

"I am a gentleman," he said, his voice low and dangerous, sending heat coursing through her veins.

Her gaze met his, desperately trying to send him a message to stop before she did something she'd regret. "And your heart is with my sister."

His eyes glazed as he moved a little closer, leaving no gap between them. "And my heart," he repeated, "is with... your-" His words trailed off, his eyes darkening.

It was clear that Edwina and the ball couldn't have been further from his mind.

She gasped at the sensation of his breath skating over her bare skin. Those threads of restraint were wearing, she knew. Much longer and she couldn't bear to push him away.

"What are you doing?" She whispered, weakly.

His lips dropped to beside her ear. "Say you do not care for me," he murmured, the words reverberating right to her core. "Tell me you feel nothing, and I will walk away."

She subconsciously tilted her head, turning toward him. It was as if her body had completely taken over. She ached for him to stop with this madness and just take her in his arms. To ravish her.
It was shameless. She couldn't admit to her need, but then she couldn't bring herself to deny it, either. So she remained there, trapped by his presence, her breathing shallow.

Her silence seemed enough of an indicator to him.

"Say something," he groaned, one hand cradling the side of her jaw. "Anything."

She softly whimpered. "I..."

His fingers tangled in her hair, now cupping the back of her head. Their eyes met, and the heat of his gaze almost made her crumble to the floor.

Her back arched slightly, pushing her into the hard plane of his chest, making a small growl escape his throat.

Anthony knew this was wrong; yet as he felt her body come flush against his, all other thoughts dissipated. She consumed his very being. When she had followed him in here, he knew deep down that this was inevitable. He couldn't wait any longer.

His mouth crashed against hers, her hands finally moving from her sides to his chest, then to his hair. She felt and tasted so good that he groaned aloud. Even better than he'd imagined.
