Kate's breath hitched in her throat as a bolt of lightning split the sky in two.

It was late, and Anthony had been in his study since dinner. She knew it was selfish of her to want him by her side every minute of the day, but even so she missed him. He was in the same house, and she still missed him.

A bout of thunder began, and Kate pressed a hand to her stomach. She had an irrational thought that her fear of storms would be passed onto the baby which was currently growing inside of her. The overwhelming need to comfort it - just in case - made Kate momentarily forget about her own terror.

Another crack of lightning, a boom of thunder.

The rain began.

It was dark, and the rain beat against the window panes like a man with a hammer. Each fresh thunderclap made Kate jump. She told herself to be patient, to wait it out, but the noises were relentless. There was no chance of her being able to rest alone.

She pulled her robe over her and lit a candle, making her way slowly downstairs to Anthony's office. When she raised her hand to knock, guilt swarmed her stomach. She shouldn't disturb him. Would he be irritated with her, think her childish? She knew he had many things to deal with; he was a busy man. And yet all she longed for was for him to cradle her in his arms and tell her that everything would be alright, that-

Before she had the chance to knock, the door was yanked open from the other side.

Anthony was standing in the doorway, and he started at the sight of her in front of him.

"I did not mean to startle you, my lord," Kate began, trembling at the sound of yet another awful thunderclap, "I shall leave you be."

"Kate." He stepped forward and took her in his arms, kissing the top of her forehead. "I was just about to come and find you. I was so caught up in my work that I did not notice the rain for a while." His voice became hoarser, worry lacing his words. "You should have come to me the second it started."

Kate pressed her cheek against his chest. He was solid and warm, and the biggest comfort she could ever have found. "I did not want to bother you," she whispered.

His hands threaded through her hair. "You never bother me."

"Both you and I know that is not true," Kate smiled, and without looking up she knew he was smiling too.

"You do vex me," he amended, "but I always want to see you. I will always make time for you. You never bother me by interrupting the awful paperwork."

She waited for the thunder to cease, and briefly opened her eyes to lift her head and kiss him. He ran his fingertips over the side of her cheek, and watched her carefully as the rain continued to hammer down. He hated to see her so tormented by nights like these. As much as it soothed him to know he was able to calm her down, he would rather her feel no fear at all.

"Would you like to return upstairs?" He asked, quietly. "Or would it be of more comfort to be somewhere with less exposure to the night... the library, perhaps?"

She glanced up at him, and melted at the genuine concern on his face. "Anywhere, Anthony. As long as you are there."

His features softened, love shining in his eyes. "I want you both to be as comfortable as possible." His hand rested on her stomach.
