"You... you-" Anthony spluttered, watching in dismay as Kate sent both of their balls hurtling through the trees. "Devil."

She turned back, grinning.

"The two of you had better go and collect them," Daphne said in mock sorrow.

Anthony gritted his teeth. This woman was constantly getting under his skin, no matter how hard he tried to avoid it. It seemed they were always locked in some kind of intense dispute, which often left him feeling more flustered than angry. He supposed that was mostly his own fault. It seemed his body was always subconsciously searching for her, drawing the two of them together without him even realising.

"After you," he said to Kate, who nodded and began the walk towards the treeline.

He was scared.
The two of them were similar; annoyingly so. Perhaps that was why they clashed. And also why she haunted his dreams. In fact, he had woken in a cold sweat the previous night, after having an awfully realistic dream about her - about being with her.

He trudged after Kate, leaving the rest of the party in their wake.

"Ow," she muttered, as a stray branch scraped at her hand.

Anthony quickly stepped forwards to push the other branches back with the sleeve of his jacket. "Be careful."

"Thank you," she muttered, hitching her skirts a little to step over a puddle.

Anthony caught a glimpse of bare skin, and almost let go of the branches. His chest, alongside the rest of his body, tightened.

Her low breath of, "Oh, my," broke him out of his reverie.

He followed her into the clearing, and saw what she was looking at. Both of their balls were right in the middle of a huge muddy puddle.
"Damn it," he cursed under his breath, drawing an amused smile from Kate. "Suppose one of us retrieves both of them, to save both of our clothes from ruin?"

"And how exactly do you propose we decide?" Kate asked, raising an eyebrow.

He considered this for a moment.
There was an idea brewing in his mind, and he knew it was dangerous; but it was oh, so tempting.

"We ask each other questions, and the first who refuses to answer must retrieve both balls."

Kate scoffed. "That sounds ridiculous."

"Alternatively," he smirked, "You can give up now, and muddy your gown."

She fingered the hem. "I'm not bothered by the gown," she muttered, "but giving up is never an option, my lord."

He smiled triumphantly. He knew she wouldn't say no, and the idea that he knew her like that made something bloom in his chest.

Kate was wondering about this game that Viscount Bridgerton had come up with. Judging by the devilish glint in his eye, there was something... dangerous about it. As well as the fact that they were completely alone, concealed from view by the trees.

Anthony leaned back against the trunk of one of the trees behind him. "I suppose it's only fair if you go first."

Her gaze snapped up to his.

She couldn't really think of a difficult question to ask; she didn't know the kind of questions he was going to ask her, and she didn't want to overstep an invisible line before the game had even properly started.
Instead, she settled for something she was interested to find out.
