Do you ever get a little bit tired of life
Like you're not really happy
but you don't wanna die
Like you're hanging by a thread
but you gotta survive
'Cause you gotta survive

It's my first day at Midtown Science High School. Yes, I know it's my senior year. I know. I moved around a lot. My mom works a job that requires her to move around a lot.

What type of job does my mom have? I don't even know. I gave up that question because every time I ask her the more ridiculous she sounds. So, I never really question her since then.

I have been to a lot of different places. We never really stay in one place for too long. But my mom promised that I'm gonna be here until I graduated.

I wouldn't count on it. My mom says that a lot. One time she says to me in grade 9 that I will be in school until I graduate. Literally, a week later, we moved.

I take a deep breath in and out as I looked at the building. Okay, you can do this. You've done this a million times. You got this.

"It's gonna be okay hon," I hear my mom says and I turn to her. "You say that every time you drop me off," I say to her, and she rubs her thumb on my cheek.

"Because I know you're gonna fit right in," she replied and I rolled my eyes. "I just feel it. It's different this time," she adds and I say it along with her. "Yeah, mom. You always say that too,"

"I know baby. But you know, in my line of work—," she was about to try to reason but I cut her off as I move my head back so her hand is not touching my face.

"I get it, mom. Thanks for dropping me off," I said to her as I grab my backpack and I open the door but she quickly lock it. "Sit your ass back down young lady. You forgot the tradition,"

Because she always drop me off on the first day of school, we came up with a handshake and a phrase along with it. Because I never made friends long enough to create a handshake. My mom is my only friend. I sigh and turn to her.

We began our handshake. First is side five then backhand slap. Then fist bumps then we touch each other elbow pit then we slide our hands to meet with each other then we hooked our fingers and lastly, we snapped our fingers.

In those handshakes, we say magic happens outside of your comfort zone. It's just a way for my mom to say don't be stupid and make friends in a softer way.

Then my mom unlocks the door. "Bye, mom. Love you," I said as I open the door and get out of the car. I saw many students maybe my age may be older or younger looks at me like they had never seen me before.

Well, they saw me before. This is my first time in this school. Great first day. "You too. Make friends okay," she said as she drive off. Easy for you to say, mom.

I sigh and walked to the school. Doing this a bunch of times kinda makes me an expert on what to do on the first day. First of all, go to the principal office. Just have to find the office.

That means I have to ask someone. Fuck! Shit. Okay, just ask. You can do it. Just say, hey, I'm Kara Dabria and I'm new here. No. Maybe don't start with that. Wait, maybe I should start with that.

How do I suddenly just forget how to greet someone? Really? I take a deep breath in and said magic happens outside of your comfort zone in my head as I breathe out.

I look around and saw this blonde girl. She looks nice and friendly. Maybe she'll help me. Just go to her. You can do this. You can do this. You can do this.
