It was a couple days into summer break and it was almost to hot to go do anything outside, but Shinji didn't really want to stay at home. Being home by himself all day was lonely and when his father was home, Shinji tended to have to tiptoe around to avoid angering him.
.
.
.
Shinji sat on a swing, just sitting there letting the heat from the sun wash over him. He had his headphones in and was listening to his favorite music.
He'd gone out in the late morning to avoid sitting in the midafternoon heat.
He didn't really like just sitting at the park, but he never had any money and didn't have friends.
Well, he had friends, but he didn't want to intrude on their summer plans.
He kicked his feet off the ground and began swinging.
As he let his mind wander, someone had sat on the swing next to him.
Shinji stopped and turned to see who had sat next to him.

The boy who had sat next to him was peculiar. His messy hair was a silvery white color.
Shinji couldn't help but stare, he was a very pretty boy.
The boy looked up at him, his eyes were bright red.
"Was this swing taken?" The boy smiled.
Shinji blushed a little, he felt a little embarrassed that he got caught staring at him.
He pulled his earbuds out, "I-I'm sorry..."
He wasn't sure what the boy had said but he was sure it was something about him staring.
The boy laughed a little, "Sorry? For what?"
"I was... I was staring.." Shinji turned his head away.
"Ah, I don't mind." The boy shrugged, "Didn't bother me none. It wouldn't have happened had I not sat here."
Shinji wasn't sure how to reply, "Mm.."
The was a couple seconds of silence.

"Say, do you live around here?" The boy swung a little.
Shinji jumped a little, "Huh? Oh um.. yeah.. I do.."
He glanced at the boy.
"I thought as much." The boy looked at him, locking glances, "So you know any good places to hang out?"
"N-not really..." Shinji looked away again.
"No? Why's that? Not get out much?" The boy stared at him.
"I don't.. usually just come to the park.." Shinji spoke quietly, he was a little anxious. People didn't normally speak to him.
"It's quite a nice park." The boy said, he was intrigued by the boy who'd been swinging alone.
"Y-yeah.." Shinji nodded slightly. He could feel the gaze of the white haired boy.
"Have you got no friends to hang out with?" The boy didn't seem to mind talking to complete strangers.
"I-I have friends!" Shinji turned to him. The boy stared into his eyes, a smile on his pale face.
Shinji frowned, "I just don't want to bother them..."
"If their you're friends, I doubt they'd mind if you bothered them." The boy looked out into the distance.
"But... I'm not so sure.." Shinji felt a sinking feeling in his stomach, he didn't like bothering people and he didn't feel as though anyone wanted to be around him.
A couple moments passed, neither spoke.
"W-what about you?" Shinji asked hesitantly, "Do you have friends?"
"I don't. I'm here for summer break to visit my mother so I don't really know anyone here." The boy responded honestly.
"Oh.." Shinji felt a little bad for asking.
"But," the boy turned and smiled softly at Shinji, "It'd be nice to be your friend."
"What?" Shinji looked at him with wide eyes, "W-why would you want to.. be friends with someone like me.."
The boy raised an eyebrow, "What do you mean, 'someone like me'?"

Shinji bit his lip before replying, "I-I'm boring and.. and I don't do anything fun and I always goof up or say the wrong things..."
"Well, I think you're interesting enough. And to be honest, I'm not the best at saying the right things either." He smiled.
Shinji just stared at him.
"So I'd still like to be friends."
"O-okay..." Shinji agreed to befriend the strange boy.
"Wonderful. I'm Kaworu Nagisa." The boy stood up, he was rather tall.
"I'm S-Shinji Ikari.."
"Well then Shinji, pleased to meet you." Kaworu seemed joyed.
He used my first name...
Shinji was confused, but he also felt happy about having a new friend. He couldn't help but smile a little.

"Oh." Kaworu looked a little suprised.
"W-what?" The smiled faded from Shinji's face, maybe his new friend had to go.
"It's just, you're pretty cute when you smile."
"C-cute?!" Shinji's face got pink and he stood up, "You can't just call another boy cute!"
"But it's true. I don't see the problem." Kaworu chuckled, Even his reaction was cute.
"It-It's weird!" Shinji frowned.
"I see." Kaworu smiled again, "Anyways, want to take a walk and talk a little?"
