The last few days of summer break, the 2 boys texted eachother a lot.

School starts tomorrow.. not excited to go

School doesn't start for a couple days still. Hope it goes alright for you Shinji

Me too

Shinji sat his phone to the side, he thought it'd be best to get off of it for a while as his father didn't seem to like him being on it all that much.
He lay on his back staring at the ceiling.
He figured he might as well get some sleep and closed his eyes, he didn't really get comfortable, he just went to sleep.

He groggily got up that next morning to the sound of his alarm.
He picked his phone up and silenced it.
He had a new message.
One from Kaworu.

Good morning
Have a good first day

Shinji smiled a little, it was pleasant waking up to a message from his favorite friend.
He messaged him back.

Good morning
I'll try

He sat his phone down on his bed and got ready. He changed and ate breakfast.
He brushed his teeth before leaving the house.

His father had been sitting at the table drinking coffee when he'd stumbled into the kitchen.
They had a brief talk, which wasn't a pleasant one.

Shinji left the house in both a hurry and a bad mood.
He walked down the street and towards the high school.

He entered his classroom and sat down at a seat in the far back. He didn't want to engage conversation with anyone in particular, so he figured he'd stay near the back.
His plans to spend the morning time listening to music was canceled when his friend Toji Suzuhara walked into the classroom along with Aida Kensuke.
"Yo Shinji!" Suzuhara walked over, "It's been a while since we've seen eachother face to face."
Shinji looked up at him, "It has.."
"Anything interesting happen during break?" Kensuke asked as he walked up behind Suzuhara.
Shinji thought a moment, contemplating if he should tell his two friends about Kaworu.
"Nothing in particular..." Shinji looked at them, then at his desk, "I-I made a new friend though.."
Both of them dramatically gasped.
"Shinji, good for you man!" Kensuke smirked, he'd resisted the urge to say that is was poggers.
"So do they like go to this school?" Suzuhara sat in the chair next to Shinji.
Shinji shook his head, he looked a little down for a moment.
"How are we supposed to know if this person is real then?" Suzuhara joked.
Shinji furrowed his eyebrows and looked at him, "I'm not making him up.."
Suzuhara gave him a look.
"Dude, I believe him. Shinji wouldn't lie about something stupid like that." Kensuke sat in front of Shinji.
"Yeah, you're right." Suzuhara thought a moment, "Sorry."
"It's fine.." Shinji was used to Suzuhara's dumb personality by now to know better than to truly get upset with him.

They talked a little bit, Shinji didn't talk much, he mainly listened to Suzuhara and Kensuke talk about their summers.
Suzuhara had stayed home most of the time and babysat his younger sister as she was finally back from the hospital.
Kensuke had went out and saw a bunch of old ships and planes. He was geeking out about it until he noticed Asuka walk into the classroom.
She looked around before she spotted the three of them.
She trotted over, "You losers are being so annoying and class hasn't even started."
"Maybe you should mind your own business." Suzuhara mocked.
Asuka glared at him before looking down at Shinji.
"Is your new little friend not here today?" She asked in a rude tone.
"N-no." Shinji avoided making eye contact, "He was only here for the summer... he went back home a couple days ago.."
"Maybe that was an excuse." Asuka laughed, "He might've realised what bore you are."
Shinji felt hurt by her comment.
Maybe she's right... but that'd be ridiculous, wouldn't it?
Shinji didn't want it to be true, but he couldn't help but feel like maybe he was part of the reason Kaworu hadn't stayed.
"It's not nice to say those things..." a quiet voice came from next to Asuka.
A blue haired girl sat behind her. She wasn't looking at them, but instead up at the front of the room.
"Rei.." Shinji spoke in a quiet voice.
"Oh? And what would you know Mrs. Perfect?" Asuka placed her hands on her hips as she turned to face Rei.

Before Asuka could continue to antagonize anyone, the teacher, Mrs. Misato walked in.

It was lunchtime when Shinji went to pull his phone out of his backpack when he realised he'd never picked it pack up from his bed.
He had wanted to text Kaworu, but that'd have to wait till school ended.
He sat with Suzuhara and Kensuke and they all chatted for a bit.
Shinji felt a little out of place with them, but it was better than sitting alone.
