I spent so long watching from the sidelines
Laughing at your jokes, singing your song
I was shocked along with millions when I came to find
After such a long fight, you were gone
People were masks to hide their pain
One wishes for sun while another begs for rain
Life is short, but there's so much to gain
Before you get pulled under by mortality's chain
Life has its riptides, life has its divides
Tame the crashing waves, why would we try?
All mentors die, we all lose our guides
Youthful dreams now gone with the tides
I spent my early years under your smile
Who said you weren't normal? Well I didn't care
Our parents worried for you all the while
Then those worries came true, and your name is a prayer
I tried on a mask that numbed my pain
I spent so long wanting sun, now I want rain
Life's short, but it was worth it to gain
Years with you before you succumbed to the chain
Life has its riptides, life has its divides
Tame the crashing waves, why would we try?
All smiles die, we all lose our guides
Youthful dreams now gone with the tides
I spent my life looking up to you, wiser and older
Stood strong, built this house, survived that war
I listened to your stories, rode on your shoulders
Within days of each other, you were no more
I kept on my mask, eased others' pain
I spent so long wanting sun, now I've missed the rain
Life's short, at least you lived long enough to gain
Years with us before you lost grip of the chain
Life has its riptides, life has its divides
Tame the crashing waves, why would we try?
All foundations die, we all lose our guides
Youthful dreams now gone with the tides
I spent so long on my own, that's no longer true
We all have our fights, but stand together in the end
One lasted longer, more hateful words threw
I was so scared I'd lost my only friends
I took off my mask, embraced the pain
Stepped out of the sun, and felt the cold rain
Life's short, but is there hope to gain
Much more than the death at the end of the chain
Life has its riptides, life has its divides
Tame the crashing waves, why would we try?
All loyalties die, we all lose our guides
Youthful dreams now gone with the tides
I spent so long, I didn't understand
I can continue your story, write my own song
I can keep on smiling, reach out my hand
Maybe life's not right, does that make it wrong?
Let's all take off our masks, learn from the pain
Bask in the sun, cool off in the rain
Life's short, but I know there's hope to gain
A dream, lying beyond the end of the chain
Life has its riptides, life has its divides
We can't tame the crashing waves, but hey, we can try
All hardships die, we can be our own guides
Youthful fears now gone with the tides
Okay, so. . .I'll probably end up erasing this later, deciding that this is too much to share on social media. . .but I'm gonna explain my inspiration for this song, which is a lot more personal than some of my other ones.
The first verse is based off of a Minecraft Youtuber, Technoblade, who you might've heard recently died of cancer. . .It's just so weird seeing someone who's "character" is invincible, so strong, so sturdy. . .just suddenly gone.
After the first bridge and chorus, the second verse is about my older sister, who was disabled so she couldn't walk or talk, and she died of medical complications relating to that when she was 13 (the same age I am now, actually. . .) and I was 9.
The third verse is actually about two people, my two grandpas, both from my mom's side and my dad's side. They both passed away maybe a year ago, within days of each other, both due to Covid stacked on top of some other things.
The fourth verse is the friend group I'm a part of right now, the first actually close friends I've ever had. At one point, we all had this huge fight over. . .I don't even know what, actually, and for a while I thought I'd pushed them away completely. Thankfully, I've made up with them, and we're better friends than ever.
The last verse is actually what I've learned in the process of writing this song, and in the reflection of basing this verse off of important people and events in my life, and how it's not healthy to dwell on the sad things, but to keep on being happy anyway, that's what they would've wanted. I hope you get something from this, and even if you didn't. . .thanks for reading it anyway. I'm not expecting anyone to, but you never know.
