((Ep. 12))
{Wen Mei}

A year had passed, and we finally got the news that our sister would be coming home.

My brother and I hurridly cleaned up the place. We knew our sister would scowl at us for being lazy and not thinking about our health. We had been busy reading books she had given us to study. That way, we would already have an understanding of what she was asking us to do or look for when she returned.

In our free time, we practiced our archery skills. Making sure our skills didn't rust. It was one of the moments we were able to relax and leave our place. They had us on a strict curfew, so we couldn't stay out for too long.

I also read the book Zewu Jun gave me when I left Cloud Recesses. I had jotted down a list of flowers to look for, along with their locations.

We jumped to our feet immediately when we heard the door open.

"Qing, you're back!" My brother exclaimed as we neared her.

I gave her a deep hug, finally feeling at peace.

She returned the hug and ran her hand against my head.

"I missed you so much."

I heard her chuckle, and I stepped away from her.

She then placed a hand on my brother's head as well.

"Ning, Mei. How have the both of you been these days?" She asked.

"I'm alright. I've just been a little bored. I'm glad you're back!" Ning replied.

I nodded in agreement.

She smiled at his response as she went to remove the lid from a pot.

"Qing, by the way... I heard that Clan Leader Wen summoned disciples from each clan to come to Qishan to be indoctrinated. Do you think Young Mater Wei and his fellows are here?" He questioned, causing Qing to drop the lid.

Her smile went away, and she looked lost in thought.

I picked up the lid and passed it to her. She hastily took it out of my hands.

"The both of you need to remember that we are not the same kind of people as Wei Wuxian. We're never going to be friends with them. Even if they're here in Qishan, you'd better have nothing to do with them." She warned.

"But why?" My brother asked.

"You don't need to know. That being said, stay away from them."

I decided to heed her advice. Something must've happened while she was away.

"But Qing, Young Master Wei is a nice person. He saved my life."

"Ning!"

"Qing."

"Do you not listen to your sister anymore?" She neared him.

He quietly looked down.

"Alright, we get what you mean. We'll try to stay out of trouble." I grabbed her shoulder with a nod.

When the gloomy mood cleared, she inquired about our reading progress. We told her that we were about finished with the last book.

I had noticed that both of us had grown a bit since we'd last seen her.

My thoughts went back to when Ning asked if everyone was in Qishan. Since one representative from each clan had to be present, I doubt Xiao would be here.

The Next Day

I arrived at the place where a member of the Gusu Lan clan was supposed to be staying. I knocked on the window near the back, and a figure appeared. It was Lan Zhan who opened the window.

"Is it alright if I come in?" I asked.

He moved to the side. His means of allowing me in. I entered the space quietly and left the window ajar, just in case a member walked in.

I saw that he had a small limp as he went to sit down.

"What happened to your leg?" I pulled an ointment out of my bag.

"It's broken." He answered.

"When did that happen? Was it when Wen Xu went over there? I never got to hear what happened because they always had me out collecting herbs to make medicine."

He stayed silent.

"Okay, um... use this ointment. It will help reduce the scarring. It also has numbing properties, so you might want to use this." I put the ointment on the table along with a wooden scoop.

He silently thanked me.

"Don't worry about the window. I'll make sure to close it, just worry about your leg."

I hopped out the window and was about to close it when I noticed him get up.

"We were attacked and they burned Cloud Recesses. To make sure they had the upper hand they broke my leg."

I winced at his response.

"I'm sorry that happened."

"How's everyone else?"

"They're safe. A lot of injured disciples, but they're safe."

"Thank you for telling me."

"Thank you for the ointment."

I closed the window and headed back home.

I ran into my sister on the way home.

She looked at me with a raised eyebrow.

"Where did you go?"

"I came back from talking to Lan Zhan."

"I told you not to get involved with them..." She said with disappointment in her voice.

"I just wanted to see who came. I never got told who they brought from the Gusu Lan Clan."

She sighed.

"Let's head inside, I'm going to make us something to eat."
