I threw the hospital door open as I rushed forward, Aaron and an officer behind me. I looked around the room before my eyes settled on Officer Dewey, who was laid out on the floor, as pale as the sickly grey hospital walls. The word "bye" was carved into his forehead.

I holstered my gun as I kneeled beside him, a familiar ache in my chest. Aaron stood behind me, staring at me.

"He took his phone. Peter Lewis has the list." I told him, the guilt weighing heavily on me.

"Alex, there's no way we could have predicted this." I stood up, turning to stare at him as Chief Emmett walked in.

"We're shooting this bastard on sight."

"Chief, if you do that, we lose our best lead on Peter Lewis."

"I don't care."

"You will care when he kills more people. Let us do our job."

The chief nodded reluctantly, moving only to let Aaron and I exit the room.

Aaron drove us back to the precinct. He frequently glanced over at me until I snapped.

"Just say it, Aaron."

"Say what?"

"Whatever it is you're thinking. How I shouldn't have let a kid handle such an important task, how I put him in harms way-"

"Alex, stop. This isn't on you." He spoke with a sense of urgency, which did nothing to ease my guilt, "If you didn't send him, it would have been you. Do you understand that? It would be you, dead."

My guilt worsened at the realization, "I... I didn't even think about that..."

He sighed heavily as he pulled into the precinct parking lot, putting the car in park.

"Lex..." He turned to look at me, "Baby, I know you feel guilty for his death, but it's not your fault. Right now, we need to focus on finding Brian and stopping Peter Lewis."

I could feel the tension in his voice, his silent plea for me to focus on the case. I nodded silently, getting out of the car and walking back to the meeting room, where the rest of the team was waiting.

Everyone sat around the table, coffee, papers, and tablets covering the majority of the table.

"Well, now we know who the copycat is." Rossi pointed out.
