"What a nice guy!"

"Shush. You're being so loud at nearly midnight!"

A flickering shadow swept past the building across the street. He stared at the dimmed property. Swirls upon swirls of darkness. They cascaded down the grey concrete building, shielding it from prying eyes.

There was an ache in his head. He heard a voice gleam in his consciousness.

'You're being followed.'

He recognized that voice. Recognized the feeling of it seeping into his consciousness.

A throb in his chest. And then—

"Tae?"

"Mm?"

"You good?"

Warmth at his hand, where the boy grasped him tightly.

"I'm doing great. Amazing, really."

The walking proceeded, towards a restaurant now; and the voice in his head, V's voice, it got louder.

'Don't go in yet. Investigate first.'

He looked around. Slowly, his hand let go of the younger boy's dainty palm.

"Uh, you guys go on ahead. I'll be there in a sec."

"You don't want Chinese food?"

"I do. I just want a quick smoke, is all. Order me some noodles, okay?"

The rest disappeared past the doors, and he was finally alone. Leaning behind him, over the storefront's brick wall, he let the light smoke at the tip of his blunt ooze into the air around him.

The conversation in his head began.

'What exactly are we looking for?' he thought.

'Someone. Anyone. They're blending into the crowd.'

'That's not very helpful, y'know.'

The voice in his head chuckled. 'I'm telling you what I know.'

'Then what's the point of stopping here and people-watching when you're not even sure if you—'

V's voice cut in to his thoughts. 'Be quiet. Look across the street.'

His eyes peered in front of him, the night city lights blending in blurry circles. An undistinguished man seemed to stop at the convenience store ahead, lingering around restlessly before checking his sides and loitering in his spot. The man pulled out a phone, pressed it to his ear.

'He's pretending to be on a phone call,' V's voice rang loud again, followed by another cackle. 'Fucking idiot.'

'What would you like to do?'

There was a silence in his head. He lowered his cigarette beside him, let it drop to the floor so he could crush it with the tips of his feet.

He pressed a hand to the side of his head, and could almost hear the amused grin the man in his thoughts must've had.

'Don't worry. I'll take it from here.'
