A clatter of utensils, the whirring of machines, and muffled chatter in the distance. Such snug noises lingered in the air, while two men sat across from each other, at a table far away from it all. They had been silent for a while now, words were lost in the sentiment of what had been a long hidden past that has finally been revealed.
And Jeongguk's tears had managed to stop, at some point. Though his sniffles persisted, a lulled expression in his stare as he kept his head lowered. But the man seated across from him was patient. He didn't rush or reprimand the younger on such a reaction.
Instead he watched him with worried brows, monitored the delicate expression over the young one's face as the boy remained entirely still.
Once another long string of silence followed, Taehyung—or rather Vante, finally spoke up in a simple question.
"Are you okay?"
Jeongguk's head lifted steadily in response, a weak rise at the corner of his lips. "Y-Yeah, um.." His fingers rested numbly over the tabletop, as he couldn't quite make direct eye contact with the other just yet. "We should go.. We've been here long enough."
Taehyung gave a plain nod, then pushed the small plate in front of him with the pad of his thumb. "May I... take you home?"
Jeongguk wiped a finger over his cheek. "Y-Yes, that would be nice.. Thanks."
"Of course." The older cracked a smile and rose from his seat, waiting on the other to do the same before they began their short walk, side by side, toward the exit. The cashier woman at the counter wished them a good day, and then the familiar chiming of the bell above the door tinkled, signaling their departure.
As soon as they stepped out the two men stopped right outside, just underneath the storefront awning, their gazes fixated on the greyed sky above them. A sky that had since begun to shed raindrops down over the streets.
"Ah-.." Jeongguk's lips parted gradually. "I-I didn't bring an umbrella..."
He turned his head to look at the man beside him, who merely returned his gaze with a sheepish grin.
"Same here..."
The younger let out a small hum, his fingers locking in front of him as a sudden memory pried its way into his thoughts. A memory that hadn't happened too long ago and yet, it somehow felt like ages in his head.
"Come to think of it.." He spoke up. "We've actually been here before.."
Taehyung's brows rose. "You and I?"
Jeongguk gently shook his head, a small smile lifting his cheeks. "It must've been Taehyung.." He paused. "I remember standing here, waiting on the rain to let out. It was raining a lot harder than right now, and I-.. I was crying.."
