Cashton Soulmate AU

~~~
Ashton hadn't planned on even trying to meet anyone at all during college. He had always had a plan and education was larger than anything else in that. That was until Calum showed up.
Calum was your average college guy, broke, common partier with grades high enough to keep the scholarship that was keeping him at the school.
"Ashy, I know you have homework but can you at least cuddle me while you do it."
His highest grade was in clinginess, given by Ashton but he just found it cute.
"Well come over here before I change my mind then." Ashton said as he scooted a couple inches away from his work so Calum could climb into his lap while he worked.
"Your the best Ash."
"I know Calum."
Ashton hadn't intended on falling for anyone while in college. Love was complicated and time consuming, no matter how good it felt in the moment. That was until he walked into his dorm one day, finding Calum setting up the tiny table by the mini fridge with microwave ramen making it look as fancy as he could with the lack of resources.
"It's our one month. My paycheck doesn't come in until next week but I couldn't let this go forgotten."
Calum's second highest grade was in romance, also given by Ashton but it normally followed with a make out session so it was normally forgotten.
Ashton could only think of running to Calum, pulling him into a forceful kiss, pressing all his unsaid words into the simple lip lock. He pulled away only to mutter some of those words.
"I love you Cal."
"I love you too Ashton."
Ashton hadn't planned on ever having to leave Calum. He was still in school, Calum having gone with the easiest route out of school, now working at a local music store. That was until the letter came, giving Calum the biggest opportunity, he would ever receive.
"I won't leave you. Ashton, you're my everything and I could never let my music get in the way of us."
His third highest grade was in music, the only official grade Ashton ever considered. He had been given it by every one of his teachers along with Ashton, and Ashton knew he couldn't let Calum ignore that.
"But you need too. You're my everything too and I need you to be happy. And you've already burnt yourself out at that store, think of what you could do. Think of you."
"But you're the only thing ever on my mind."
Ashton never considered the few short words on his thigh, his parents saying they meant little to nothing until he or his soulmate died. That was until the day before Calum's flight came.
He laid there in bed, Calum at his side breathing slowly as his mind was left at ease, greatly contrasting Ashton.
His fourth highest grade was his ability to peacefully sleep, originally awarded by his best friend Luke and later copied by Ashton and just about everyone he met.
Ashton brushed his fingers over where he knew the tattoo to be, higher on the outside of his left thigh, small and delicate writing, similar to what he had seen on Calum's crappy school notes.
He knew what Calum's said, a single word near the dark-haired boy's collarbone that only had left Ashton with a more worried mind. "Goodbye."
Ashton never even thought about Calum being his soulmate. The two had just been in their perfect world for the idea to come up. That was until he was hugging the boy goodbye as boarding for his flight started to be called.
"I love you. Remember that I always will."
"I will. And you need to remember that I will always love you."
Calum's fifth highest grade was one was one only Ashton would ever know, the connection between the two always in a silent agreement over the matter
"I know. Don't say goodbye it will only hurt more."
Calum only nodded giving the boy one last peck before saying his parting words. "Well, you need to, or it won't feel real."
"Goodbye."
And with that, Calum's flight was called for boarding, and he started heading to the gate.
Ashton knows he'd never have the guts to go out and find him to tell him. So instead, he just smiled and waved to the boy, fingers brushing the words imprinted on his thigh, the same words that had just left his soulmate's mouth.
