The dwarves, Bilbo and Lyra trudge through the wilderness Eriador. The Misty Mountains are plain in the distance, capped with snow. Over ranges, rivers and waterfalls they pass, silent with determination. Slowly, their path becomes higher and higher, looming over the fields below. The Misty Mountains grow nearer with every step.
Finally, the Company finds themselves climbing the vast mountain range, through rock and snow, framed against the blue sky behind them. For Lyra nightfall could not come sooner. But once it did she regretted wanting it so badly as a fierce storm raged in the air. Lighting strikes here and there and rain pours down around them with no mercy whatsoever. Thorin leads them on across the narrow trail on the side of the mountain. A cliff lies on one side with a sheer drop on the other.
"Hold on!" Thorin shouted as they carefully make their way across the ridge, half-drowned in rain. As Bilbo walks, the stone beneath him gives way. Dwalin manages to catch him in the nick of time.
"We must find shelter!" Thorin shouted over the howling wind.
Dwalin points up, looking at something in the distance he shouted, "Look out!"
A massive boulder hurtles through the air. It hits the mountainside above the dwarves sending rocks crumbling down around them as they press themselves against the mountain.
"This is no thunder storm!" Balin states matter of factly, "It is a thunder battle! Look!"
A massive stone giant rears up from a nearby mountain. It rips a giant chunk of stone from the top of the mountain.
"Well bless me! The legends are true! Giants, stone giants!" Fili breathed as the stone giant throws the rock across the valley. It crashes into another stone giant, rising from the mountainside. The dwarves watch, caught in the middle.
"Take cover, you'll fall!" Thorin shouted. Debris begin to fall over the Company once again. The dwarves hold onto the mountainside as the ground beneath them begins to crack and split, separating the dwarves.
"Kili, grab my hand!" Fili urged! "Kili!"
Kili, Oin, Gloin and Thorin begin to drift away from the others. The dwarves stand on the knees of a third stone giant, who rises slowly to the fight. The second stone giant lumbers over, headbutting the third giant.
As the giant falls backwards, Bilbo and the dwarves are sent tumblin forwards and backwards, hanging onto the mountainside for dear life. Thorin, Oin, Gloin and Kili manage to jump onto the still side of the mountain. The third giant rises back up again. Slowly, the second throws a punch, sending it falling back into its place on the mountain.
Thorin watches, helpless, as Lyra and the rest of the Company is seeming crushed between the stone.
"No!!" Thorin shouts as he runs forward across the ledge. He runs along the path, feeling a wave of relief when he finds them alive and well.
"Its alright! They are alive!" Gloin sighed as the rest of the dwarves had followed Thorin. Thorin extends a hand to Lyra who only swats it away, mumbling that she can get up on her own. However once she stands and moves closer to the rock away from the ledge she feels a sharp pain rush up her leg. Thorin notices her face change from one of indifference to that filled with pain, but the change passes just as quickly as it came. He made a mental note to ask about it later.
"Where is Bilbo?" Fili spoke up, as he looks around the mountainside but when he looks over the edge, he is shocked to find Bilbo dangling off the edge of the cliff. "There!"
