Irène's POV

Six years ago - France

"We are going away for the weekend. Don't leave your sister alone, okay?" my mom says and I nod.

My friends asked me come to their house for a freshman party before we start highschool. I can't stay home just for my brat sister. She is ten years old, only four years younger than me. It's not like she is five.

I give my parents a hurried kiss on the cheeks before they leave.

Once I see their cars leave the street, I run upstairs, ignoring my sister.

I need to find some clothes but everything I own is cheap.

My dad is soon going through an election to become the mayor of Strasbourg, but until then we can't really afford all the things we want.

And I only want expensive things.

My sister Arielle, runs up the stairs to see what I'm doing. She never gives me any kind of privacy.

"Goddamn, leave!" I yell as she stares at me trying on a short dress with sleeves.

"I will tell mom!"

I turn to her. "No, the fuck you will not. Don't be a brat for once and let me enjoy this party. Do you want my friends from school to think I'm a loser?"

"No... I just want to come too."

"I can't. You are still a kid."

"I'm only four years younger than you!" she retorts.

"Go away!" I yell at her again and she starts crying. Goddamn, she is too damn spoiled.

I don't even know why my parents don't want me to leave her alone at home, she is pretty chill, it's not like she actively tries to do anything stupid. Unlike me.

We've been getting a lot of death threats over mail though, specifically because a lot of people don't want my dad to become the mayor.

Once I'm finished, I go to Arielle's room so I can at least give her a hug.

"Arielle?" I yell as I knock on the door.

I open the door when I notice she isn't replying.

She is on the bed, still crying.

"Oh, come on! It's just for a few hours. I'll be back before 1 am."

"It's not that... I just want to come too. I don't feel safe here."

She read the death threats. It accidentally slipped through the mail and she saw it first. Now we have to be careful and put her in bed, cuddle her, and tell her there are no monsters in the house ready to 'eat' daddy.

"Nothing will happen. Those people just want to scare our dad."

"Promise?" Her green eyes, similar to mine, fill with hope. Her hair is brown and short. She got it from my mom's side.

"I promise." I give her a kiss on the forehead. "I will be back before you know it."

She nods.

"Why don't you watch a movie?" I suggest and she nods, grabbing her blanket to come to the living room with me.

I put on a movie and give her some snacks from the fridge before leaving.
