Celeste took a deep breath in and held it- waiting.
The sun was setting and golden hour was in full effect, the old neighborhood bathed in the most beautiful hues of pink and gold. She had knocked on the front door twice, and could hear muffled laughter from inside.
She could see the layout of the house behind the door as if she could see through walls-
The entryway, with the white cabinet where her mom always put keys and mail.
The sitting room on the left, with plush carpet and the comfiest couches- the scene of many, many childhood sleepovers.
The dining room to the right, with the large dining table that was always filled with kids who didn't live here.
The kitchen was just past that, with the cutest pink tile and the most delicious smells in the world wafting out of it.
It didn't matter how long ago she left, or how long she was gone. She was home now. Her face was warm as she continued to wait, growing impatient. What if everyone is upset? What if Val doesn't want me home? What if-
The door flung open and an actual goddess stood in the entryway, wearing a toothy grin.
Her brown eyes seemed almost golden as the porch light reflected off them. Her long hair was half up, pinned delicately against her head. She was wearing green flowy pants that sat low on her hips and a black top with no.... Yup, no bra. Celeste could definitely see that there was no bra involved. Her top was tight against her soft belly, leaving two or three inches of her midriff exposed.
She looked exactly the same, yet somehow better than ever before. Celeste could feel the sweat break out on her hands as she stuttered- "Val, I-"
"Shut up and hug me, Cel!"
She reached out and embraced Celeste with open arms. Celeste was tense for a second, before melting into her best friend's arms. "I've missed you so much," Val murmured into her black curls. She pulled back and gave Celeste a light kiss on her shoulder, through the thick wool of her coat.
Fuck, Celeste thought, as goosebumps tickled her skin. Still feeling it.
She let go and Celeste awkwardly stumbled backwards. Val let out a laugh, straight from her belly. "Well, let's go get your bags! Steve and Wanda are here already, they were so excited to see you."
They walked to the bus and grabbed the few items packed in the backseat. Val inhaled deeply as she ran a hand along the light grey interior. "Wow, I can't believe it's exactly the same."
Celeste chuckled and looked over at Val. "Yeah, I try to keep it in good shape. Mom would want that." The twinkle in Val's eye was evident, her toothy grin coming back as giggled. "Yeah, except I bet it's been a while since you got the windows all steamy..."
