It was my first day of sophomore year at Brown University.
I woke up in my shared dorm room and turned over in bed.
I didn't have any classes until 10:30, so there was no need to set an alarm since I usually woke up around 9:45 anyway.
I had spent the weekend unpacking and setting up my side of the dorm room, which was shared with Sadie, who was my roommate from the year prior.
Today I had woken up at 9:53.
I woke up, and got dressed in a pair of jean shorts and a white tank top.I put two gold band rings on my left hand, one on my middle finger and one on my index finger. Then put a double band ring on my index finger on my right hand, just like I wore every day.
I put on my converse and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I looked at myself in the mirror and tied my hair back into a loose pony tail.
"Ugh! Y/N you woke me up!" I heard Sadie yell from her bed.
"How to hell did I wake you up?" I spit in the sink and and rinsed my mouth with water.
"Because of your gigantic fucking feet stomping around at the crack ass of dawn." She laughed and I walked over to her bed.
"Well, you better be grateful for my gigantic feet, or else you'd be sleeping through our first class."
I laughed and took a pillow from my bed and hit her with it."Why can't I sleep in longer?" She turned around so her back was facing me.
"Because we have class in 25 minutes. Get up." I said and walked back over to grab my phone.
She groaned and fell on her back.
"I'll buy you Starbucks if you get up now." She turned her head towards me and smiled.
"Fine."
After about 10 minutes she was up and ready to go to class - after stopping at the Starbucks cafe.
-
I ordered Sadie her coffee and we started walking to class - or, the theatre.
"Please, come in come in! Take a seat wherever you please, preferably near the front." Our professor said.
The room was huge and bright and there were only a few people who were there, but we had arrived 2 minutes early so I assumed people would start to flood in soon.
Sadie and I sat together in the front row and I pulled out my phone since we still had a minute left until class started.
I heard more people start to flood in behind me but I didn't want to look to see the faces that I would see every day until the end of the school year in fear that I'd look weird and nosy.
Once 10:30 hit I could feel the presence of at lease 30 people behind me.
"Alright everyone. Good to see all of your faces this morning! My name is professor Peace, I will be you Theatre Arts professor this year. Now, you are my sophomore class so you guys have gone over the basics of acting in course 1 which you took in freshman year, am I correct?" I heard a few quiet murmurs behind me and I slightly nodded my head up and down.
Professor Peace was a man in what looked to be his late forties possibly. He had a full head of thick brown hair and a darker complexion.
"Alright! I'll take that as a yes! So this year we will be going into depth about the musical perspective of Theatre Arts: rap, pop, opera, so forth. What I'm handing out to you, is a syllabus. Full of expectations, responsibilities, resources, and what to expect in the upcoming year." He started handing out the syllabus to me and Sadie, then walked back to continue handing out the sheet.
When he walked back to the front of the room and clapped his hands together and smiled.
"Uh, so the first thing we will be doing is getting to know each other. I want this class to be comfortable for everyone. So I want you to turn to the person closest to you, snd introduce yourself."
I smiled and turned to Sadie. "Hey, I'm Y/N, nice you meet you!" I laughed and she introduced herself to me.
"So, how's your morning going?" I asked and rested my chin in my palm and smiled at her.
"Pretty shitty. I was woken up by my ridiculously loud and annoying roommate. But it's cool because she got me coffee." She said and I turned my head to face forward.
"Alright, now everyone find someone else to talk to."
We all got up from our seats and walked around to the room to find someone new to talk to.
I caught a persons eye from across the room and we walked towards each other.
"Hey, I'm Lewis." He said and held out his hand for me to shake
"I'm Y/N, nice to meet you." I said and held eye contact
"So, what made you choose Brown?"
"Uh well, it was kinda just luck. I'm here on a scholarship for acting, so naturally I'm here."
"Oh that's so awesome! Full scholarship on acting?"
"Yeah. Scouts came to my plays all of my junior and senior year and they scouted me." I asked.
I didn't want to brag, that was the last thing I wanted to come off as. So I tried to change to topic to him."So why'd you choose Brown?" I asked
"I applied and got in! It's not a great story really." He said and laughed awkwardly.
"Oh, when did you know you wanted to come to Brown?" I asked and crossed my hands over my chest.
"Since I started high school. I've always been into Theatre and I've always known of this program. I think it's a great fit!" He said
"It seems like it." We laughed a little and looked around my room awkwardly at everyone else.
"Did you apply to any other colleges?" Lewis asked.
He followed my actions by folding his hands over his chest and smiled at me.
"Yeah, Yale and Princeton. I got into both." I said and smiled then nodded slightly.
"Wow Damn. So you're really smart!"
He said. After he said this I took time to study his appearance. He was trying to flatter me I could tell.
I've had a few boyfriends, and if there's one thing I've learned it's that I don't fall to flattery. I don't blush or anything like that. Mainly because I don't need validation from other people. I know my worth and that's all I need.
I have a 4.2 gpa, I made it in to every Ivy League school I've applied to. I can act, sign, sew, rap, braid, and have more traits that most don't have. I have confidence, integrity, strength, determination, and more.
I know my worth. That's more than I can say for most people.
As the Lewis, he was average. He had big dark brown eyes, light-ish brown and thick hair, plump lips, his eyelashes were long and his skin was pale.
"Yeah, I guess I am. What were your other options?"
"Well, I got turned down from Harvard but got into Columbia. So I was going to go their until it turns out I was off the waitlist for Brown and got accepted." He said
"Oh that's grea-"
"Okay everyone." Professor Peace said then continued "the person you are currently talking to is going to be your partner for the rest of the semester."
