Ch. 7: Mischief

Madelyn's Apartment

"Hello, Madelyn. I've heard wonderful things about you."

Madelyn stares at the handsome, mysterious figure before her.

"Um, who are y-?"

"Where are my manners?" The man takes a step closer to Madelyn, "I am the God of Mischief, Loki of Asgard."

Madelyn stares at the chillingly charming man...or god...before her. Loki is looking her in the eyes with a grimacing smirk on his face.

"Ya know..." Madelyn starts trying to make her way around Loki, "I would love to chat, but I've gotta get to work."

Loki steps in her way, forcing her to stop just inches from him.

"I'm not really one to negotiate," Loki says, taking a stop closer to her, her face almost touching his chin.

Loki looks down at the girl, who is trying to hide her fear. She stands up straight,

"I have to get to work."

She then tries to push herself around Loki. He is taken aback by her assertion, but he soon regains his composure. He grabs her by the wrist and spins her back in front of him, her back now pressing into her front door. He holds her arm firmly in front of her chest.

"I wanted to do this nicely, but since you'd like to be forceful, I'll do this the hard way," Loki growls. He takes his free hand and reveals his scepter out of thin air, which leaves Madelyn in slight confusion.

Loki takes hold of the scepter and positions it close to Madelyn's chest. Her breath quickens as she starts to panic. She quickly glances around for an escape route: nothing.

'Think, Madelyn, think! Remember your training.' Madelyn's thoughts are racing as she tries to analyze the situation.

Suddenly, Madelyn slams her foot down on top of Loki's. Loki lets out a sharp groan, stepping back to catch himself from the blow. The scepter is now at a reasonable distance away from Madelyn. That's not enough though.

Madelyn slams her fist into Loki's shoulder, wincing slightly at the sharp armor she wasn't prepared to hit. Loki smirks at her as she shakes her fist. He starts to move closer to her, ready to attack.

Instead, Madelyn kicks Loki's shin then slams her forearm against his. She moves her free arm to his hand that guards the scepter, and she disarms him.

Loki then stumbles backward, slowly raising his hands up, almost in surrender.

Madelyn holds the glowing scepter firmly across her body as she takes a step closer to Loki.

"Get away from me. NOW," Madelyn orders.

Loki sighs, but he doesn't look defeated. Madelyn stops moving forward as she notices Loki's facial expression turning into a sly grin. Her face contorts into one of confusion.

"Why are-" She starts until she is swiftly pulled backward into a hard chest plate. The breath is knocked out of her as she feels a sharp blade press into her neck. She glances down, breathing heavily, and sees Loki's arm wrapped around her waist, holding her tightly against him. She suddenly feels a cold breath against her ear as Loki leans against her face.

"I would watch how you speak to me," He whispers into her ear.

Before she can respond, she feels a sharp point hit her chest, and everything around her goes black.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier is a wreck. Tony and Steve sit somberly at the table with Fury as he tells them about Coulson's fate. Clint and Nat continue to converse, mostly Nat trying to reassure Clint that Madelyn will be okay. Thor broke free from the cage and finds his hammer lying on the ground a few feet away. Bruce wakes up, naked, in a pile of stone and dirt after transforming out of the Hulk. The team is defeated. Nat and Clint enter the main room of the helicarrier as Fury says,

"Along with Coulson's death, there is another victim at stake, not counting the entire world," Fury makes eye contact with Nat and Clint as he says the next line, "And this one is even more personal."

Tony and Steve both glance at Nat and Clint as they take their seats.

"Loki is believed to be going after Madelyn Lassiter, a girl who was experimented on by HYDRA with both the Tesseract and another unknown substance," Clint starts.

"We rescued her from the HYDRA base," Nat adds in, looking down at her hands.

"And I told Loki where her new, safe location was," Clint drops his head in disappointment.

"You weren't in control of your mind, Clint. Stop blaming yourself," Nat places her hand on Clint's shoulder.

"Well," Fury states, "I guess that's it if there's nothing more we can do." Fury sighs and turns away.

"This isn't over. We've still got a whole lot of fight left in us," Steve states, standing righteously from his seat.

Fury smirks, back still turned to the team.

"We'll do whatever it takes to defeat Loki and get Madelyn back," Steve adds, looking to the team for backup.

Tony nods, "We'll take him down."

"But where do we start? Clint, did Loki mention a location or anything?" Nat asks, turning her attention to her best friend.

"Nothing. He never really talked about anything after the helicarrier attack," Clint admits, sighing.

"Well we've gotta start somewhere. Maybe Loki has gone to a hidden location or maybe he doesn't even have a plan," Steve thinks aloud.

"Let's think about what he's been doing so far though. What's his attack been? Why did he do this attack here? Why Coulson? Why Madelyn?" Stark questions.

"To tear us apart," Steve answers.

"Yeah, divide and conquer is great, but he knows he has to take us out to win, right? THAT's what he wants. He wants to beat us, he wants to be seen doing it. He wants an audience," Tony theorizes. The rest of the group follows along, nodding with his points.

"Right," Steve starts to put the pieces together, "I caught his act at Stuttgart."

"Yeah, that was just previews," Tony starts, "This is- this is opening night. And Loki, he's a full-tilt diva, right? He wants flowers, he wants parades. he wants a monument built to the skies with his name plastered..."

The team looks at one another, Steve and Tony both have an 'aha' moment as they realize where Loki is headed.

"Sonofabitch!" Tony exclaims.
