Notes: Surgery, injuries, non binary reader, Kix being soft and supportive.
I was sitting by the window with a mug of tea enjoying the sunset and its gorgeous colors. The soft blend of purple, pink and orange set a calming glow in the room. But no matter how beautiful and relaxing the scene before me couldn't distract me from the dull yet excruciating pain in my knee. The injury happened a while ago but I don't think it fully healed. Every time the pain flared I remember that chunk of durasteel crushing my leg on that rescue mission. I managed to get it off but I passed out as soon as we got onto the ship, then I woke up in the medical bay with some bacta on my knee.
"Are the others alright?"
I asked the medical droid.
"Everything is fine ms l/n but please don't attempt to move anytime soon."
The pain in my knee made sure I'd listen to the droids' orders.
"Hey y/n!"
Kix' voice snapped me out of my flashback. I turned to see him walking towards me with a huge smile on his face.
"Hi Kix."
We hugged making sure I didn't spill my tea.
"Whatcha drinking?"
"Chamomile tea with honey. It helps me relax and the honey makes it nice and sweet."
"Yeah, I heard it helps with relaxing the muscles."
"Mhm, how was your day?"
"Well, you know that phrase 'you learn something new everyday?"
"Yeah?"
"Well, today I learned that Dogma hates needles and throws a freaking fit every time one comes near him."
My eyes widened as I tried and failed to suppress a laugh.
"Are you serious?"
"Yep and guess who else found out?"
"Oh maker, please tell me it's not Hardcase."
"Nope, Fives and Hardcase."
I burst out laughing.
"Rest in peace Dogma."
"I don't think he'll ever know peace with those two around."
The moment was ruined by the pain flaring up suddenly. I hissed in pain.
"y/n? You okay?"
I nodded, desperately trying to ignore the pain. I didn't want Kix to worry.
"I-it's fine Kix."
"You do know that I'm a medic. A medic who deals with Captain Rex and his stubbornness. I also know when you're lying."
"Just a cramp in my leg. I think I need some sleep or something."
Kix just raised an eyebrow and sighed.
"Do you need help getting to bed."
"No no, I'm good."
Big mistake. The first step I took made it worse, causing me to scream in pain and I collapsed on the floor.
"y/n!"
Kix grabbed me before I face-planted into the ground. I cried in pain trying to catch my breath and obviously failing.
"Y/n, y/n tell me what happened!"
"That rescue mission, when the durasteel fell. Didn't heal properly."
I gasped out.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"Didn't want to worry you."
"Tch. you idiot. You know I hate it when you're in pain like this."
I barely registered his words as my vision was slowly turning black and his voice faded away.
"y/n, hey, y/n. C'mon try to stay awake now.... Try to......."
Then everything went dark.
I woke up to the sight of bright hospital lights flooding my vision. My limbs felt numb and stiff. I groaned as I slowly began registering everything.
"y/n?"
"Kix?"
I blinked rapidly as Kix' figure came into my vision.
"Hey sweetheart."
"What- where am I?"
"You're at the hospital."
"Hospital?" I slurred out.
"Yeah, when you passed out I brought you here. We- we had to do an emergency surgery after analyzing what's going on with your knee."
I looked down and saw that my leg was in a cast of some sort. The edges of my vision went black as I struggled to control my breathing. Kix immediately grabbed my hand.
"Shh shh shh. It's ok, it's alright. I'm here. I'm here."
He gently stroked the back of my hand with his thumb.
"C'mon, try to breathe for me, in and out, in and out. Yeah that's it. You're doing great."
He gestured for the other doctors to leave the room. I finally calmed down. Kix kissed the back of my hand.
"You okay now?"
"Yeah."
I tried moving my left but it hurt really badly.
"Don't move your leg."
"Yeah, I got the message."
He chuckled and we sat in silence.
"So what's gonna happen now?"
"Well, you are going to FULLY recover then I will help you walk normally again. I'll be here every step of the way."
I nodded.
"Promise?"
"I promise."
"Remember, baby steps first. Alright?"
I groaned as I forced my leg to move.
"Yeah yeah, I got it."
I slowly took a step forward, then another, then another. Walking was getting easier for me with Kix by my side. I looked up and saw that I managed to walk across the room by myself.
"Kix! I did it! I managed to walk by myself!"
He had a huge smile on his face.
"Yeah you did! I'm so proud of you!"
He came over and hugged me.
"Hey."
"Hm?"
"Can I sit down now?"
He chuckled.
"Sure. But next time please tell me when you get injured like this."
