The next morning, Jase dropped Michael off at school. Katie was still home resting. Sadie had stopped by to hang out with her while Jase was gone. The morning was quiet and calm.
Sadie helped clean the kitchen from where Jase made Michael breakfast before taking him to school. Katie read a book for a little while.
Jase noticed that Michael had a new teacher so he got out of the car to introduce himself.
"Hi. I'm Jase. Michael's father." He shook his hand.
"Mr. Bryant. Nice to meet you." The teacher shook his hand back.
"I haven't seen you around here before," Jase informed him.
"I am a sub. His teacher is out with the flu." Mr. Bryant filled him in.
"Oh wow. I hope she feels better soon. I will be here to pick Michael up at 2 this afternoon."
"Not a problem. Nice to meet you and don't worry. Your son is in good hands."
Jase hugged Michael and walked off. He had a bad feeling in his gut that something was off. He couldn't shake it off.
Mr. Bryant made a call once he saw Jase had left. "Hello." The call was answered.
"Ms. Purdy, the plan is in action. Jase just left and Michael is in my custody. I will have him hidden within an hour."
"Good... Now make sure nothing happens to him. He is my grandson."
"He is safe with me. I will let you know once we are alone."
"Ok, be discrete. No one must see you. If you pull this off, I will reward you greatly." Jessica smiled on the other end of the phone.
"You have nothing to worry about. Talk to you soon."
Jase went to the office to question the principal about this so-called substitute. He could not shake this bad feeling he had.
Ms. Thomas came welcomed him into her office. "Come in and have a seat."
Jase sat down and looked around the office before meeting her gaze.
"Mr. Montgomery, how can I help you today?"
"Yes, my son Michael has a new sub today. I have this weird feeling that something isn't right."
"Are you referring to Mr. Bryant?" Ms. Thomas wondered.
"Yes. That's him." Jase agreed.
"Did Mr. Bryant say or do something to make you feel this say?"
"Not at all. It is just a feeling."
Mr. Thomas sat on the edge of her desk and gave Jase a blank stare. "I see. Well, Mr. Bryant comes from 10 years of educational background and he had really good references."
Jase stood up and looked out the door to the hall. "Are you sure it is legit?"
"Mr. Montgomery, I understand that you and your wife have faced a great ordeal, however, we cannot go around accusing good people of horrible acts. It could ruin the man's reputation."
"Just check on them. That is all I ask."
She smiled. "Unless you can give me a good reason as to why I should, I cannot do that. It can be considered harassment."
"I understand that, but this is my son and I just want to know who he is?"
Ms. Thomas nodded her head. "It is against ethics but I will have one of my of the women in the office go and check on him."
