"See, this isn't so bad, Be." Kiara spoke as the the both of us carried our lawn chairs towards the front of the crowd.
A giant movie screen stood tall reading OBX Summer Movie Series. "I don't want to be here, Kie." I whined. My skin was glowing with sweat from the July heat.
"To bad." Kie smiles. "I already told my friends that you're coming." She nods her head over towards the two boys sitting down in lawn chair at the front.
My eyes widen. "Kiara!" I groan. "I'm not in the mood to converse with people. I'm mourning, remember?" I remind the girl. "I know, me too." She sighs.
"If you feel uncomfortable just act like you got your period and we both can go home." She explains. I glare at the young teen. "Fine." I sigh walking over to the boys.
"Hey, boys." Kiara greets, setting up her lawn chair. I stand shyly next to my cousin. "Y'all remember I told you about my cousin, Phoebe." She takes my lawn chair and sets it up by her.
"Hi." I wave shyly. "Hey, I'm Pope." The first boy says. He backwards cap laying lazily on top of his head.
"And I'm JJ." The blonde boy salutes me. "Nice to meet, y'all." I sit down and lean back on the chair. "I'm gonna get you guys a Pepsi." Kiara says, hopping out of her seat.
"Wait, I-." I try to call out but Kiara is already on her feet towards the refreshments. "So how long have you been in the Outer Banks?" Pope asked, sparking up a conversation. "A little over a week." I answered. "And do you like it?" He asked. I shrugged my shoulders. "Yeah, I guess. It's very different from Columbia, South Carolina." I explain. Pope nods.
"Kie, says you graduated?" JJ asked. I nod. "Yeah. I did." I smile. "Oh, so you must be going to college in the fall?" Pope's eyes widen. I look down at my hands. "Um...no." I sighed. "I'm actually taking a gap year." I say. JJ rolls his eyes. "You crazy rich Kooks always taking gap years. Using your parents money to travel and "find yourself." JJ said, making quotation marks with his fingers.
I scrunch up my face. "For your information; I'm not using my parents money because they were killed in a car crash two weeks ago." I shout. JJ's face immediately goes white.
"I am so sorry." JJ immediately apologized. "I didn't know-." I cut the boy off. "No! You don't know. Mike and Anna thought it would be a good idea if I took some time off from school." I snapped.
"He's sorry." Pope says, trying to calm the drama from stirring up. I run my fingers through my curls. "Yeah, I shouldn't have judged you." JJ moves over to me. "And for my token of my gratitude. I am giving you my hat." He takes his hat off and places it on top of my head.
I bite my lips, trying to stop a smile from forming. JJ bats his eyes at me. His bright blue hues searching my face for forgiveness.
A small smile escaped my hold from my teeth. A small giggle leaves my lips. I tuck my curls inside the hat. "You're forgiven." I say, adjusting the hat. Pope claps his hands. "Well, at least the ice is broken." He chuckled. The three of us laugh.
Kiara comes back with the sodas. "Um...just saw Rafe, and he said, and I quote, tell your boy that we know what he did." Kiara repeats taking a seat in her chair.
"Who's Rafe?" I asked, looking behind me. "Where is he?" JJ asked, nervously. "Right there." Kiara nods her head towards his direction. Pope and JJ whip their heads around fast.
Three boys stood a little ways behind us. They gave us threatening glares as they drank their sodas. "Great, the whole death squad." Pope's voice goes an octave higher. "Don't stare, bro." JJ turns back around. "Just warning you, bro. If they corner me, I'm coming out swinging, okay? Slice and dicin'. I'm on edge right now." JJ picks up a bag from under his chair and holds it tight against his chest.
"And if that doesn't work. I got this right here." He says lifting the bag. I raise my brow in question. "Got what?" I lean forward looking over to see what can possibly be in that bag.
"Yeah, yeah. So, we just gotta stay in the group They can't come get us if we're in the group." Pope explains. "Like a school of fish." JJ says. "Yup, yup!" Pope nods. "Stay in the school. Can't leave the school." He said, taking a sip of his Pepsi.
"I'm sorry, JJ..." Kiara starts. "Please tell me that you did not bring a gun here. JJ, there are kids." Kiara scolds.
"A gun." I quickly stand up from my seat. "I think I should leave." I look over at Kiara. Pope grabs my arm and drags me back down into my seat. "You can't leave." He says. "We're in Kooklandia, now.
I pout my lips. "Kie I did not bring a gun. Everything's fine, okay." JJ assured. "Wow, thank you. That's really convincing. I love that, JJ." Kiara snaps.
"I swear to God, JJ if there's a gun in there-." JJ cuts me off. "There's not, okay!" He snaps, leaning more into his chair.
"Welcome to the summer movie series...." The announcement says as the sun begins to set. "Founding principle, you guys. No secrets amongst Pogues." Kiara says. "What is Rafe talking about?" She snaps. "Kie." Pope says leaning forward. "It might go down tonight." He whispers.
"What does that mean?" I asked the two teens. "Why are y'all so afraid of this Rafe guy?" I look back at the tall boy once again. Searching for any signs of weirdo behavior.
Our eyes lock with each other. His blue eyes penetrates into my green ones. His body language is agile. He flashes me a sly smirk. I pull my lips into a thin line before whipping my head forward.

The four of us watch the old black and white film. JJ and Pope have occasionally looked behind, making sure the three boys don't run up on them.
"I'm gonna use the restroom real quick." I tell Kiara before getting up from my seat and skipping through the crowd towards the restrooms.
I take JJ's hat off, stuffing it into my back pocket. I shake my hair as I walk behind the crowd.
Before reaching the bathroom; a long arm blocks my way to the entrance. Long veins protrude along his white skin.
"Are you a Kook or a Pogue." I look up at the boy. It's Rafe. He towers over me with his overwhelming height of 6'3. My 4'11 frame looks up into his blue eyes once again.
"I really don't even know what those words mean." I answer the boy. I try to push past him but he blocks me once again.
I begin to feel goosebumps rise along my brown skin. "Guys like you, are the reason why girls go to the restroom in groups." I snap.
"Guys like me?" He asked. I cross my arms. "I don't have time for this." I snap. "Move." I demanded. Rafe let's out a boisterous laugh.
"You gotta be a Pogue. I mean why else would you be slumming it with those idiots." He rolls his tongue against the inside of his cheek.
"Whatever." I scoff, rolling my eyes and turning on my heel. Rafe grabs me roughly by the arm and pulls me towards him. I stumble on my feet and fall into his chest.
"Hey!" Pope shout. "Leave her alone." His hands are balled up into fist. JJ come running up behind him. "She didn't do anything, Rafe. Come on." JJ pleads.
Rafe's other two friends join in. "I don't know boys..." The blonde one says. "Should we leave her alone?" He smirks. The shorter boy rubs his hands together, mischievously. "Hell, no." He says. Rafe and the two boys laugh.
I struggle against Rafe's grip. "Let me go!" I kick and scream. "Last time, Rafe." JJ threatens. "Not so burly without a gun now are you." Rafe smirks.
"Let her go." Pope demands. "Alright, fine." Rafe smirks. I suddenly feel my body hit the ground hard.
"What the hell man." JJ shouts before he starts swinging.
Rafe and the shorter boy begin to tackle Pope while JJ fights the blonde one. "Let go of him, Topper! You fascist asshole!" Kiara comes running. She hits Topper with the back pack. Topper turns around snatching the bag out of Kie's grip; throwing it across the grass. She jumps onto Topper's back. And begins to kick and punch his shoulders. Rafe notices. He grabs Kiara off of Topper's back.
"Let go of me, Rafe." She struggles against his grip. "Stay out of this, Kiara." He throws her down on the ground with me.
"Phoebe, are you okay." She crawls over to me. Her long brown hair hanging loosely over her shoulders as she catches her breath. "Yeah I'm good." I cough. "Come on we gotta do something." I get in my hands and knees; crawling over to the bag. The two of us open the bag and take out a lighter
Pope begins to suffocate as Topper tightens his grip on Pope's neck. JJ thrashes around as he is being held back by Rafe.
"Light it up, Kie." I nod. She opens the lighter and begins to burn the screen. The red and orange flames  quickly rise up, destroying the movie.
"Get off of him." I push Rafe away. "Kelce, let go of JJ." Kiara shouts to the shorter boy. I run over to Pope. "Hey, take your time. Breath." I soothe the young teen.
"You guys are freaking idiots." Pope coughs. "We saved your ass." I help JJ off the ground. "Come on."
