My phone vibrated noisly against my dresser; waking me up from a deep nap. I could feel my cat, Echo, weigh on me as she made biscuits in the blanket. The sun was setting in a few, leaving a warm orange light to seem through my blinds and onto the hardwood floors. I reach for my phone. Several missed calls and a few text from her. Pushing myself up; I quickly call her back. She's quick to answer. "Phoebe?" She asked. "Hey, Sarah. Sorry I was sleeping." I apologized. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes as hopped out of bed. "Can you meet me at the docks, by the marina?" She asked. Her voice was rushed. "Um...yeah, sure. Let put some clothes on." I yawned. I reach for a pair of shorts on my floor and an old tank top. "Okay, Kie's meeting us too." Sarah says. "Okay, I'll be there in fifteen." I said, before hanging up and slipping on a pair of sandals. It was surprising to hear Sarah's voice so frantic, after only being back home for less than 24 hours. What could possibly have gone wrong since we've gotten back. I decided to leave my curls wild; not really having time to put myself together. I looked in the mirror before stepping out my room. The house was still silent. Something I was used to since moving here. It kind of made me wish I should have invited Rafe to stay after he visited me earlier. He seemed at war with himself. Like he had to force his body to do the right thing even though his mind wants to do the wrong thing. Mike and Anna were still at the restaurant; so at least I didn't have my aunt and uncle wondering where I was off to. Leaving the house, I noticed that my Jeep was no longer in the driveway. I assumed Mike and Anna got rid of it. There way of keeping me out of trouble, I guess. I let out a sigh, grabbing my pink bike from the side of the house. The wheels are a pristine white, from having never been really used before. The bike was also decorated with a big woven white basket. I swung my right leg over before balancing myself. I kicked off and began to head towards the Marina which was about a 10 minute bike ride. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The shallow waves waves crashed against the docks. The sun was finally setting, making the sky blue from the dusk light that illuminated off the water. I spotted Kie and Sarah sitting at the end. Sarah was now showered and clean. She wore a pink floral top with a pair of white shorts. Her blonde locks were pulled back into two pigtails. She left the rest of her hair down. Sarah looked pretty. Worried, but pretty, nonetheless. "Hey." I smile, softly at my friends as I join them at the dock. "What's going on?" I leaned on the railing crossing my ankles as I focus my attention on the two girls. "So...." Sarah starts, looking between Kie and I. "I went back to grab some clothes and a phone, from Tannyhill, and you're not gonna believe this." Sarah spoke. She paused for a moment taking a deep breath. "Rafe is back." Sarah says. My eyes flickered down to my shoes avoiding eye contact with the girls. Hearing Rafe's name, made me realize I had no intention to tell them about Rafe coming over earlier. It felt like a fever dream. Hearing him express his gratitude. But I believe him. For once he sounded so sincere. Like he was going to change. "I saw him at the house. I don't think he saw me, but I think the cross is coming back, to Wilmington tomorrow night." Sarah explains. "What?" Kie gasped. "Yeah." Sarah sighs. "Does Pope know?" Kiara asked. I finally look up from the ground, crossing my arms. "No. I was gonna tell him at the Château." Sarah said. "Wait, he can't. He's on lockdown." Kiara looks to me. She nudges my shoulder. "Be, hey, you listening?" She pushed. "Yeah, of course." My voice is low. "I'll hit up, Pope. Kie you can go to the Château and tell John B and JJ." Sarah demands. "I need to talk to JJ anyway." Kie nods. "My parents are gonna kill me." Kie sighs, pushing off the railing. "Guys, wait!" I call for them. My voice was louder than I meant for it to be. "Be, you good?" Sarah furrowed her brows. "Rafe came by." I quickly blurted out. My fingers fumbled with the brackets that covered my wrist. The two girls were silent. Starting at me in shock. Kiara's lips twitched with disgust at the sound of Rafe name. "He came by to see me." I repeated. "Wanting to apologize. For everything-." I was cut off by Kie. "Apologize for what!" She shouts. "Taking the cross? Stabbing you? Shooting Sarah? Killing Peterkin? Tormenting us?" Kiara listed. "Alright, I get it!" I screamed, silencing her with my hand. "I get that you guys hate Rafe." I breathed. "But he means a lot to me." "Do you even hear yourself, Phoebe?" Sarah crosses her arms, stepping up to me. "My brother is psychotic. All he does is fucking take. And you're just too stupid to see. I mean I get that he's your first crush, but he's just a guy!" Sarah yelled. "I can't." I scoffed, walking away from the two. "Phoebe, come on!" Sarah shouts. I quickly turn around facing Kiara and Sarah again. "I don't want to do this anymore! Okay? I don't want to go after gold. Or chase after a fucking cross. I'm sick of running for my God damn life! This is bullshit!" I begin to cry. My tears burn my cheeks as words vomit from my mouth. "I came here to be with family. To heal from the fact that my parents are fucking dead! And the minute I get here; you two drag me into some fucking treasure hunt. That I didn't even want to be apart of." Sarah and Kiara look between each other. Kiara was pissed. I knew that for sure. While Sarah, wore a more uniform expression. One between understanding and anger. "I'll help you guys with the cross. I owe Pope that. But after, I'm done." I breathed. "What's going on with you?" Kiara asked. Her voice lower this time. "You sound crazy. Sarah and I didn't drag you into this mess. It was your decision." She rebuttled. "You're making decisions based on who you're sleeping with." She states. "Kie..." Sarah warns. "No Sarah, don't." Kie snaps. Sarah pulls her lips into a thin line step g back from the conversation. "Excuse me?" I cross my arms. "You're screwing, Rafe." Kiara shrugs. "Screwing? What is this? The 1950's?" My voice was laced with annoyance. "That's what this is, right? Rafe fucked you. And you just cant get enough. God, Phoebe. He treats you like shit. And the crazy thing is you're more than willing to go back for more." Kiara's words stabbed me. Always knew how she felt about Rafe. But hearing it actually coke out of her mouth was confirmation that I didn't need. "Don't put your anger towards me just because you can't decide who you like. You practically had a thing for John B. He kissed you. And you told me that you didn't mind it. Then you dragged Pope around like some lost puppy. Slept with him, and then dumped him two days later!" My mind was moving a mile a minute. "And everybody knows that you have feelings for JJ. You're just too scared to admit it." I breathed. "That is completely different. And you know that! I'm not the one putting myself in danger over some boy. I'm not the one who can't have kids anymore!" Kiara's eyes widen. She immediately regretted her words. I felt the tears run down my cheek. My throat closed up as I choked on my sobs. "Kie didn't mean that Phoebe. I think we're all just really tense. And I didn't mean to say crush. I meant first relationship. But there will be other guys." Sarah chimed in. She tries pulling me into a hug. "Don't touch me." I snap. Stepping away from the girls and turning on my heels in a fit of rage.
