I caught my breath; running my hands through my curls as the wind whipped harshly.
"I gotta text our friends." Kie says, docking the boat. "Good idea." I exclaimed, tying the bowline tight. "Send P4L!" I added. Kiara nods, quickly typing the words and hitting send.
"Now we wait." She says. "Now we wait." I repeated, affirmatively.
I pull my legs close to my chest. Kiara sits with me, tapping her foot against the wood flooring.
"What if they don't come?" I spoke after a short silence. I was completely worried. If the Pogues didn't come through; then what are me and Kie supposed to do? Of course we can't just go back home without them.
And then it hit me. Home. What were Mike and Anna going to think. Going to say. They can't ground. I'm an adult. Kiara on the other hand. Being seventeen, a teenager, was complicated in the Carrera household.
"Don't say that, Be." Kiara breathed. "They're going to show up. They have to." She say, laying a calm hand on my shoulder.
"I was really worried about you, Phoebe. We all were. We thought Rafe had killed you or at least hurt you." She said.
I shake my head. "I was with Rafe in Guadeloupe." I felt tears run down my cheek. "And I realize how selfish I was. I didn't do anything to find you guys. Rafe told me to forget about it. So I did." I cried.
"I wanted to have some peace. Even if it wasn't real. Ever since my parents died, I feel like my life had been one huge rollercoaster. I can never catch a break. But I can't keep blaming everything on Rafe. I keep saying I want my life to change. I want better for myself. But what I'm not changing, I'm choosing!" I was completely hysterical. Ranting without taking a breath.
"Hey!" Kiara grabs my face in her hands. She was always the strong one between us. Rational and level headed. Sometimes she felt like the older one.
"Don't blame yourself." She starts. "Yes, your life has been a disaster since you moved to the OBX. But what we're doing isn't wrong. We're helping our friends. Hell, we found Denmark Tanny's gold and the Cross of Santo Domingo!" She smiled.
"Don't blame yourself. Don't blame anyone. And I can't believe I'm saying this, but don't blame Rafe. I know that you love the guy. But also know you love me and our friends. Don't let that come between you. Just let life happen." Kiara exclaimed.
My face was now dried with tears stains. She was right. "God, Kie!" I laugh. "When did you become so wise?" I joked. "Sometime during my time on the deserted island." She laughs with me.
I pull my cousin in for a tight hug. "I missed you, Be." She hums. "I missed you, too."
She pulls way giving me a smile, before her eyes dart behind me. Her smile grows wide with happiness.
"Jayj?" She calls out. I turn around seeing the blonde haired Pogue. Kiara immediately takes off towards JJ.
JJ quickly runs to Kie embracing her into a tight hug. I took my time to catch up, wanting to give the two of them space before joining.
"Phoebe!" A thick Bahamian accent yelled my name, bringing my attention to a bunch of barrels in an alley.
One by one, my friends piled out from their hiding spot. Cleo, John B, Pope, and Sarah.
Tears began to stream down my cheeks again. Tears I didn't know I had left to cry. "Oh, my God!" I exclaimed.
Cleo was the first to reach me. "Where have you been, girl?" She pulls me into a long hug. The rest of the Pogues catch up with me and Kiara, pulling each other into a group hug.
"We thought you were dead." John B, says. I shake my head. "You can't kill a Pogue, am I right." I smile, wiping the tears from my face.
"Are you kidding me? Is this you." JJ asked, looking towards the boat.
"It's Rafe's boat." I answered. "What? Huh?" Pope laughed. "You wouldn't believe it if I told you." Kiara says. "It's kind of a long story. Come on, there's some clean clothes below deck." I rush onto the boat.
"Oh thank, God." Sarah moans. The seven of us pile onto the boat. "Now this is a boat!" JJ beamed with happiness.
Kiara smiles, helping JJ with the bowlines. I pull Sarah and Cleo down below deck. Rafe suitcase laid in the corner of the bedroom, while my suitcase remained tucked behind the closet.
"Yall can wear some of my things." I pull out a pair of cargo pants for Cleo and a some shorts for Sarah.
The two of them immediately change into the clean fabric, happy to be rid of the dirty clothes they've been wearing for days.
I grab Rafe's suitcase. "You don't think the boys would mind wearing Rafe's clothes?" I asked the girls.
"They don't have a choice. The three of them smell like grease monkeys." Cleo chimes. I nod. I grab some shirts and pants from Rafe's suitcase along with a blue button up and two t-shirts.
The three of us come back up to deck. "I have some clothes for y'all, that Rafe left behind." I smile at the three Pogues.
"Sarah, I need to talk to you." John B says, ignoring the clothes as he pulls Sarah away from the group.
JJ and Pope give me a strange look as the blinks several rules at me and the clothe in my hand.
"I'm not wearing that." Pope sneers. "I roll my eyes. "Just put the clothes on. Who knows how long it's gonna take before we're back in Kildare." I snap.
"Alright!" JJ puts his hands up in surrender. "No need to get your panties in a twist. I'll wear them." JJ takes the t-shirt and shorts.
Pope glares at JJ, like he was betraying him by wearing Rafe's clothes. Did I miss something?
"Thank you, JJ." I smile at the boy. "Your turn Pope." I hand him the button up and the pants.
But before Pope can take the clothes, John B rushes past him, off the boat. "Hey! John B! What are you doing?" Pope called out.
"I'll be right back! I love you, Sarah!" John B smiles, before taking off around the corner.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun was beginning to set. And we still didn't have no word from John B.
He had been gone for an hour already. "I can't believe he just took off." Pope sighs.
"Guys, incoming!" Kiara shouts. I look out past the street, seeing several trucks beginning to surround the docks.
Dozens of men hop out the truck with guns. "That's Singh's men! Right there! Come on!" Cleo shouts, pointing at the trucks.
"Where's John B?" Pope panicked. We all panicked. We couldn't just leave. Not while our friends was out there.
"I don't know! He said he would be back by know." Sarah cried. "Okay, well he's not!" Pope yells at her.
"JJ, what are we gonna do?" Pope screams. "We gotta make a stand. That's what we gotta do. That's the only option." He says, pulling a gun out from the back of his shorts.
"What?" Kiara shouts at JJ, clearly not liking the gun option. "Kiara, we're not splitting up again!" JJ yells at her.
She shakes her head. "Guys you didn't see what me and Phoebe saw! He killed Portis! We can't stay here! Phoebe back me up here!" She cried.
"Kiara's right. Singh is dangerous. That's why we need to defend ourselves." I rush over to the captains wheel where I left Rafe's gun.
"That's what I'm talking about, Be." JJ chimes in. "Phoebe, no!" Kiara shouts.
"Be, what the fuck are you doing?" Cleo asked. I ignored everyone as I fixed the magazine in the gun. Cocking it back and taking the safety off.
"Phoebe, don't!" Pope tries to grab the gun from my hands. "Get off me, Pope!" I scream.
I aim the gun at one of Singh's men and pull the trigger.
BANG!
JJ does the same as the men begin to shoot at us. "Get down!" Get the fuck down!" I shout at the Pogues.
"You two are crazy!" Cleo screams at JJ and I. "GUYS STOP!" Kie yelled. "WE'RE NOT LEAVING JOHN B!" JJ continued to shoot at the men.
Several bullets blow past us as I duck behind the wheel, only coming up to shoot. I didn't want to kill. But I wanted to live. I wanted all my friends to live. JJ was the most reckless out of all of us. And if he was going to be crazy. Then I was going to be crazy with him.
"NO POGUE LEFT BEHIND!" I scream. "WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO! SHOOT UNTIL THEY'RE ALL DEAD!" Sarah argued.
"THIS ISN'T GONNA WORK! YOU GUYS ARE ACTING FUCKING CRAZY!" Cleo try's putting a hand on my should but I nudge her off.
"WE'RE NOT SPLITTING UP, KIARA! STOP!" JJ shouts at Kie. She grabs the gear shift, putting the boat in drive.
"GO!" Pope says, with Sarah. JJ tries to grab Sarah as she helps Kiara with the boat.
"STOP FIGHTING! WE CANT JUST LEAVE!" I scream, dropping my gun.
"JJ! PHOEBE! GET DOWN!" Kiara screams. Pope pulls JJ down as Cleo takes my hand, shoving me onto the floor.
Dozens of bullets flew the air hitting metal as the six of us laid our bodies flat. The boat quickly drift off to sea away from shore. Away from John B.
"Fuck!" I exclaimed, Running my fingers through my hair.
I could do nothing. We were too far and too torn apart to come back.
"I'm sorry, John B." Sarah whispers.
