Murphy's POV:
"Hey come here." I beckoned Dustin, lighting the cigarette in my mouth. He coughed as he glanced up at me. "Where'd all my eggo's go?" I asked as I slid my arm around him. He smiled awkwardly before saying "I got hungry. Sorry Murph." I glanced into his eyes suddenly suspicious, noticing the little frown line appearing which only made an appearance when he was lying. He was my little brother, I'd practically raised the little shit I could tell when he was lying to my face. The argument rolled back and forth in my head as I decided on whether to call him out on it. With Will being missing I knew he was probably dealing with a lot so I left it. "No funny business tonight. I want you at school and then straight home." I scolded, doing it for his own good. "I have AV Club today." He mentioned, his back to me as he swung his backpack on. I hummed and watched him walk to my car.
After dropping him off at school I sat in my car, smoking and listening to a playlist I'd made in the basement a few weeks ago by burning a few tapes. A knock on the window interrupted me as I slowly opened my eyes, still nodding to the song. I groaned loudly and rolled down the window seeing Nancy there. "Hey." She smiled softly, I could see the distasteful look on her face as she inhaled the smoke.
"Wanna ride?" I asked closing my eyes again. She must've nodded or I don't even know because next thing we were driving to school together. Her blushing pink dress and pretty curly hair contrasted against the polar opposite to my entirely black outfit and pin straight hair. I smiled at her as she awkwardly nodded her head.
"You had sex with him didn't you?" I said breaking the lack of conversation, the music continuing, I grinned as her eyes shot to mine. "What? No. I... Murph!" She exclaimed her cheeks tomato red as I threw my head back laughing. "Holy shit Nance. You fucked the one and only King Steve Harrington?" I asked, enjoying the redness creeping up her neck. She threw her hands over her face at my crude words as I nudged her with my arm.
"Your secret is safe with me." I reassured as we pulled up to school. I looked over at her as she fiddled with her hands "Thanks Murph." She smiled softly not meeting my eyes. Opening the door, her eyes met mine questioningly. "Let's go..?" She said confused. I leaned my head against the seat before saying "I've decided I quit school." Laughing at the way her face dropped.
"I'm kidding. Just ditching this once." I smiled. Her eyes pleaded mine "Please come in." I rolled my eyes as she spent the next 5 minutes begging me to join her. "Jonathon needs you Murph." She whispered. Sold. I got out the car, no bag in hand, a cigarette behind my ear and the rest of the pack in my stomper boots. My walkman in its usual spot tucked under my fishnets.
Before we can even begin a conversation her boyfriend joins us, that there was probably my cue to leave but god help me if I turn down witnessing another one of their riveting conversations. "I feel like... everyone's staring at me." She mutters. Steve glanced over at her unsure "Oh, I didn't...I didn't tell anyone." Steve said trying to be quiet noticing me. I smirked to myself as Nancy responded "I know... I know of course not" A few minutes of silence went by only the sound of my lighter flicking on and off in my hands and the noise from the students gallivanting around surrounded us.
Then Nancy spoke, nervously "But what about like Carol and Tommy and them..?" She asked. He shook his head, looking down at her before saying "You're being paranoid Nance" I clicked my tongue as he looked over at me, his eyebrows raised. "I don't think she is." I said looking straight ahead as I carried on walking. He sighed, his lingering eyes suddenly looking away from me and back at Nancy again.
"I'm sorry." She mumbled, I rolled my eyes. "No... No it's cute." He smiled down as I began walking to my locker almost heaving. I punched my locker until it hung open, dangling a little to the left, creaking noisily. I looked at the array of snacks and picked up a random bag of M&M's and ripped it open, leaving it hanging in my teeth.
