"Yeah, and then he told my fucking parents I passed out in most of my classes today," You explain to Eddie as best you can over the cigarette perched between your lips, the phone pressed between your shoulder and your ear as you lay another lick of black polish onto your nails.
Eddie only laughs at your torment, voice muffled through the speaker. "He's just trying to get under your skin, (Y/N). He seems like an ass, just don't show him he's getting to you and he'll get bored soon enough."
"You're right." You sigh, admiring your nails as the polish dries down and stubbing out your cigarette as you hear the front door open with your family's return, hiding the ashtray in the drawer of your nightstand.
There's a light knock on your door a few moments later and you glance up as it's gently pushed open, your mom's head peeping around the entry. She mouths Eddie's name and you nod to confirm it's him you're speaking to.
"Evening, Eddie!" She speaks up then, and you relay his response. "Honey, it's your turn to walk Winston." Your mom continues, quieter, though she's met with a groan from you.
"I gotta go, Ed's. See you tomorrow." You were already climbing off the bed and scowling at the notion of having to go outside again today, your friend saying his goodbyes before you put the phone down.
"Have you been smoking in here?" Your mom asks and you pale, clearing your throat. "No, it's probably just a shirt of Eddie's or something. I'll toss it in the laundry so it doesn't stink the place out." You respond, though you know she doesn't buy it. Still, she steps out with a heavy sigh and leaves you to slide on some shoes and a jacket.
You head downstairs and the family dog, Winston - a yellow Labrador - was already holding his leash in his mouth, knowing what was coming. His tail wags frantically as you approach and you can't help but smile. You hook his leash up and leave the house with him in tow, pulling out another cigarette from your pocket as the cool fall air sends a chill down your spine that the lighter does nothing to help with as you flick the flame into action.
Reaching the end of your driveway, you hear the front door slam across the road and look over to see Billy charging from the house towards his car. In the dim glow of the streetlight, you could have sworn you saw the telltale shimmer of tears on his cheeks, but figure it was probably your tired brain just messing with you so you simply shrug it off as he peels out of the driveway in his car and leaves an echoing roar as he drives off down the street.

First period dragged. Math was your least favorite subject and it showed in your grades. It was time for second now, but as promised you had instead skipped it and were heading towards Eddie's dealing spot behind the school in the woods.
He was already at the bench when you get there and his face beams with a grin as you approach. "There she is. Morning, sunshine."
"You're a terrible influence on me." You tease. "My parents are going to kill me if I don't graduate, you know." He just laughs and stands up on the seat so he can perch on the edge of the table, yourself joining him as he hands you a lit joint. You take a long drag and exhale slowly, the buzz settling over your limbs and making them tingle.
"What do you want to do today?" He asks after a beat, taking the smoke back from you as you lean back on your elbows.
"Well, we have Tina's party tonight."
"Christ, you still want to go to that shit?"
"It's Halloween! We have to go. Besides, you promised." You were pouting and so was he, but for a different reason and mostly to mock your own. His lips slowly curl upwards into a wicked grin after a moment though, clearly having some mischievous idea. "You're right... and you promised I could pick your costume."
