Beyoncè's P.O.V.

I woke up bright and early on a Sunday morning. The month was July, so it was a hot, humid day in Atlanta, Georgia. The night before, I sat out a white dress for church that I considered to be appropriate for the muggy weather, but also appropriate attire for a pastor's wife....

I married my husband, Usher Raymond, when I was only eighteen years old and he was twenty one. My father, who was also our pastor, basically told us that we had to get married in order to make things right with the Lord. Why? Well, Usher and I had "sinned" by having sex and conceiving a child out of wedlock. My father reminded us of the scriptures that condemn any type of sex that is not between a husband and wife. Then told us that we had to get married before the baby was born.

Did I want to get married at the age of eighteen? Absolutely not! Neither did I want to be pregnant at that age. But as my father said, I should've thought about that before I had unprotected, premarital sex. I couldn't deny that his words were true. But I was young and I thought I would lose my very popular, handsome boyfriend if I didn't please him sexually. He never said that he would be with another girl if I didn't have sex with him. But other girls in the church were constantly throwing themselves at Usher. My own insecurities told me that I needed to open my legs up in order to keep him around...

But I digress! On May 25, 1999, Usher and I got married in my daddy's church. We were dirt poor! He was working as a city bus driver and I was a cashier at McDonald's. Luckily, we were eligible to receive assistance with our rent through Section 8 housing. We also had to apply for food stamps. The bright side was that Usher received health insurance for the two of us and the baby through his job. So at least we had some kind of coverage. Because without it, we would've been screwed!

On December 2, 1999, our only child, Zendaya, had arrived. I had just turned nineteen that September and Usher had turned twenty two in October. Though we were young adults, we were determined to be great parents to our precious baby girl. Usher was driving the bus on weekdays from five am to two pm. Then he worked as a server at a restaurant from six p.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. I eventually got a better paying job working as a customer service representative. We were able to get off of assistance and move into a two bedroom apartment. We wanted Zendaya to have her own bedroom to play around in.

Now, you're probably wondering when, how and even why did my husband become a pastor. My father, Pastor Mathew Knowles, became my husband's mentor after we got married. He had so much of an influence on Usher that he ended up taking online seminary classes to become a pastor. We both grew up in church and have always believed in having a relationship with God. But Usher became extremely devout and dedicated to the Christian faith. So much so that he earned a degree in religious theology. Which helped him get hired as the Senior Pastor of a ministry called Greater Emmanuel Baptist Church.
