in which everyone has a timer on their wrists that counts down to the moment they meet their soulmate

The timer that's engrained into your wrist is counting down quickly, the seconds passing by, but you're not paying any attention to it. You've only just woken up, vision still bleary as you blindly reach for your phone, turning off your obnoxiously loud alarm. You're tempted to stay in bed, but some unknown force surges through your body and you sit up, stretching your arms above your head, yawning. You throw your covers to the side and step out of bed, a shiver running up your back as your feet hit the cold tile.

You make your way towards your bathroom, still oblivious to the fact that you only have a few minutes until you meet your soulmate. You brush your teeth, wash your face, use the toilet, wash your hands. And then you're off to the kitchen, planning on eating an easy breakfast of cereal.

It's as you're reaching for the milk that you notice your timer. Your hand freezes, eyes widening on the single digit that sits in the minute section. You breathing shallows, and you waste at least a full minute just staring.

You're rushing out of the kitchen and back to your bedroom, intent on making yourself look presentable for whoever your soulmate is. You strip yourself from your pajamas, throwing on shorts and a tank top, brushing your fingers through your hair. Even though you just brushed your teeth, you breathe into your hand, just to make sure.

You can do nothing more than pace around your small apartment, glad that your roommate had already left for her class--you just know that she would make fun of you for your anxiousness. What are you worrying about? she'd ask. Soulmates are literally made for you.

And, while that's true, there is the possibility that your soulmate will reject you, or that someone is made for you but not you for them. Although those were far and few between, with only about 100 cases of each in existence, it was enough to put doubt into your mind.

There's a knock at the door. You hesitate, just staring at the door in horror as though it had committed a crime. Then another knock comes, and you know that you must face whoever stands on the other side.

When you whip the door open, you feel a burning on your wrist--the sign that your timer has disappeared. You ignore it in favor of the redhead that stands in front of you, not even looking at you.

"Hey, I got you your..." She trails off as she looks up, and bright blue eyes catch your own. Both of your jaws drop simultaneously, yours at the sight of the beauty in front of you, hers at the fact that her wrist is suddenly burning, and she drops the pastry that was in her hand. "You're, uh, you're not Noah," she whispers, still struck at the fact that she's standing in front of her soulmate. She hadn't even realized that today was the day--she hadn't paid attention to her timer at all this morning.

"Uh, no, I'm--I'm not." You both stand there in silence for a moment, taking each other in. "You, um, you dropped your do--"

The redhead interrupts you, and while you would usually be upset, you didn't mind, already practically obsessed with the girl's smooth voice. "I'm Sadie."

You nod, swallowing. "Y/N." A pause. "Do you, would you--uh," you gesture towards the inside of your apartment, opening the door a little wider. Sadie takes the hint and smiles, stepping through the doorway of your apartment.

Once you close the door behind you, and you turn back to the girl standing in your entryway, she's already looking at you. "I feel like we have a lot to catch up on."

bonus: it's half an hour later, and Sadie's sitting at your kitchen table, laughing at some joke you made and completely ignoring the vibrations that are coming from her back pocket.
