in which maybe happy endings are for everyone

adult au!

"God-fucking-damnit!" you cursed as you stepped into your house, slamming the front door behind you. You had just been at lunch with your girlfriend--ex-girlfriend--when she decided to break up with you. Nearly seven years of a committed relationship, just down the drain! You two had been going out since your junior year of college--she was from your psychology course--and you were planning to move in together once she finished grad school, but that was obviously out of the question now.

"God damnit!" You weren't even particularly surprised at the break up; things had been weird between you two for a while now. She had been pulling away, and you honestly had become tired at trying to get her to stay. So, that wasn't what you were upset about. No, you were upset because you had your five-year college reunion tonight, so you were going to have to see both her and other people from your past that you hadn't spoken to in a while. Namely, a specific redhead that you lost touch with once you both graduated.

You glanced at the clock--four hours until the reunion. Unfortunately, you had moved a few hours from your university, so you had to hurry to get ready. You quickly got changed and applied a fresh face of makeup, determined to not let this breakup ruin your reunion.

=======

When you arrived, the main building on campus was already swarmed with people. Your university was large, so you weren't too surprised, but you honestly didn't expect this many people to show up.

You began to mingle with acquaintances from your college years: a girl from history here, a guy from math there, maybe a few hook ups that went awry. However, you couldn't help yourself from scanning the crowd for a head of fiery red hair. And when you found it, bright blue eyes were already staring back at you.

"Excuse me; sorry; pardon me; I just have to get--, thanks; 'scuse me." You pushed through the nearly endless crowd of people until you were standing in front of her: Sadie Sink.

"Y/N," she breathed out, staring up at you. You had always been taller than the other girl, and it was only exaggerated by the heels that you were wearing. To your surprise, she pulled you into a hug, wrapping her arms around your neck as yours flew to her waist. "How have you been?" she asked once she pulled away.

"Good, yeah. I've been working at that publishing firm, the one--"

"That you always wanted to work at?" Sadie finished, arching an eyebrow. You nodded, smiling. "Good, I'm happy for you."

"Well, how about you, Sink?"

"I've been fine." An awkward silence fell over the both of you as you just looked at one another, old memories resurfacing. She didn't look much different since graduation, yet at the same time her facial features seemed to have matured and you could have sworn that her eyes got bluer.

"So, are you still dating--what's her name, Max?" Sadie asked, breaking the silence. You shook your head immediately.

"Oh, no, no. We just broke up, uh, pretty recently, actually." You nodded your head as you spoke, watching for any indication of what the redhead thought.

"Oh, I'm so sorry!" She rested her hand on your bicep, a frown adorning her face.

"It's alright," you said, waving her off. "What about you? Have you been seeing anyone?"

"A few people here and there, but I just haven't really been able to commit," she admitted, shrugging.

"Any reason why?" You knew that it was probably too invasive of a question to ask, especially since you hadn't spoke to the girl in nearly 5 years, but things were starting to feel normal again and you couldn't help yourself.

She hesitated. "My heart's still stuck on this one girl."

Butterflies practically erupted in your stomach at the thought that maybe--just maybe--you could be the person she's talking about. However, Sadie had never said anything about liking you; it was just your old crush resurfacing, and the hope that came with it. "And who might that be?"

"You, Y/N. I think it's always been you."

You froze, face heating up at the confession. "Oh yea?" you chuckled. "I think it's always been you, too, Sadie."

So, maybe it had taken you guys nearly eight years to get together, but at least you could both confidently state that neither of you were a footnote any longer.
