It was just any other ordinary night. They called me to pick up a load of gravel to deliver four states over, and I didn't hesitate because I never had a problem driving at night before. Though my mother knew my routine, she still couldn't help but worry every time she heard the engine of my black western star 4900EX roar to life.
I kissed her forehead and assured her that I would be alright like I usually did before leaving home. I got into my truck and drove to the destination with my mother on the other end of a call as I always allowed, putting her mind at ease.
Upon my arrival, I noticed that only the security guard was there and the person to assist me with loading the material in the back. Nothing seemed amiss as this was a setting that was familiar to me.
After leaving the truck, I noticed that the guy loading would occasionally glance at me. I didn't pay much attention to it and stood on the cab ensuring that he was satisfactorily loading my truck. Once he had finished, I threw a blue plastic tarp over the load on the back and secured it, double-checking to see that it was in place before climbing down. While doing so, he started small talk that I wasn't interested in, which would later progress into advances after I was back on the ground.
I made it clear that I wasn't interested, but that seemed to have flown right over his head. I ignored him and went about my business, but he decided to get physical. This guy is a few inches taller than me and a little overweight but had a slight advantage. He grabbed me unexpectedly and shoved me hard against the back of the truck, and I fell to my knees, clutching my chest, which I had hit in the process. I was now in pain and very irritated, my anger overpowering the pain I was feeling at that time.
I stealthily pulled my pepper spray from inside my jacket, and when he got down behind me, I quickly spun around, spraying him square in the eyes. He hissed in pain and fell back. I put the spray back in my jacket and took the opportunity to vent my anger on him, doing great injustice to his face with my fists. He tried fighting back, but his attempts were futile. All he did was scream in pain, trying to shield his face.
I didn't know how long I was there attacking him before I felt someone grab me and pull me off. I was so focused on getting back down and finishing what he had started that I didn't even realize who it was.
The angle from which the security guard held onto me caused pressure on the area I had hit on the truck earlier, which sent immense pain coursing through my body now.
An officer came and took the guy away for medical attention as he cried and screamed various insults directed towards me. My anger surged again, and I lunged forward to attack, but the security's grip on me was well secured.
After I calmed down, I begged the security guard holding onto me to let me go in between labored breaths. After he did, I fell to the ground, trying to catch my breath. "Ma'am, are you alright?" He asked, stooping down beside me.
"I'll be fine, just give me a few minutes." He helped me to my feet, and an officer alongside another guy made their way over to us. The other officer on the scene called over the one who was tending to me, and they started conversing among themselves.
The security guard apologized repetitively as the other person who came with the officer supported my stance. After a while, the officer returned to us and apologized to me. It appeared that there were security cameras around the premises that the workers were not aware of, and one of those cameras captured our encounter.
After the security guard finished making his rounds around the premises, he went to check the cameras, and when he realized what was happening, he called the police on his way out to help. They offered to take me to the hospital, but I refused.
The police saw all they needed to see and took the guy away.
I got my phone out and noticed seven missed calls from my mother. I excused myself and called her back. She was frantic on the other end, asking about my wellbeing. I didn't hang up the phone when I thought I did, and she overheard a part of what took place. I assured her that I was alright and that the police had taken care of everything, but that was my mother; of course she wouldn't calm down until she saw that I was entirely alright and standing in front of her.
I looked over and noticed the police were now restraining the guy who came with them earlier and the one who assaulted me laid on the ground below him with a few more injuries to his face.
After the call ended, the guy from before approached me and asked if I was alright; to which I responded yes and thanked him for his assistance. I turned to get back in my truck when he called out my name, stopping me in my tracks. "Has it been that long that you forgot me already?" He asked, causing me to turn to him visibly confused.
It was then that I took the time to get a good look at the man standing in front of me, and my eyes filled with tears even though I barely recognized him."...Nathan?"
He nodded in confirmation and I leapt in his arms, squeezing him as he returned the gesture.
To my disappointment, I had to pull away quickly because of the state of my chest."The boys are proud of you, but I still had to beat the crap out of him," he stated causing me to roll my eyes and smile. "Thank you," I whispered as a tear escaped my eyes and I melted in his arms ecstatic to finally see him again.
"You are in no condition to drive. You can stay at my place tonight, and if you still feel like going tomorrow you can."
I didn't argue, and before long, we were on our way to his home. When we arrived, he introduced me to his beautiful fiancé, Jasmine. She was also a medical doctor. We got along well, and she tended to my bruised chest. She gave me some painkillers, and we spent the rest of the night catching up.
He did well for himself in life after we all got separated. He later met up with Jasper and Alex, who weren't so happy about taking over their family businesses, but they shared the same interest in the trucking community.
They would work together to later own one of the largest trucking companies in the country and branch off internationally. One of those branches turned out to be my employer.
Best coincidence ever.
