"Hey Bug," I said walking up to her as she got out of her truck. Unlike the rest of us, her nickname didn't play off of her real name, I couldn't remember how she got it, but it always stuck. She was a few inches shorter than me and stood at about five feet, her hair was short because she had never been able to grow it out, she often dyed it and this time it was blonde. "Hey Deli, are you excited?" she asked eagerly. "To spend a week camping, swimming and fun with my girls? Heck yeah!" I said holding my hand up for a high five, she slapped it and we snapped together at the same time, it was our thing. "I think Mackenzie and Juno got the tent all set up, so we can get our stuff in their now," I told her, "Yep, I'll get it once my camper's ready," she said, jerking her thumb back to her camper behind her. I nodded and walked back to my own camper to get my sleeping bag and pillow.
After we had blown up the all the air mattresses and set up our sleeping bags, we decided we wanted to go swimming in the lake. It was getting late and the the water was cold, but we were desperate and surprisingly we were not the only ones in the swimming area. There was a boy there too, with two other girls. He had curly blonde hair that hung down to the middle of his ears, he was tan and fit and moved gracefully in the water, like he spent most of his time here in the lake. Freckles dotted his nose and cheeks, sun kisses my mother called them, and his cheekbones were very pronounced. I didn't realize I was staring until our eyes met, and I froze. His eyes, oh his eyes, they were an image I would never forget, deep and timeless, the color of sapphire, bright and full of mischief.
One of the girls laughed and splashed water in his face, causing him to look away. I felt a twinge of jealousy, but my jealousy was soon replaced by sadness. The girls that were with him were beautiful, I would never have a chance with them, even if they were "just friends" why would he want to talk to me? Back where I come from, I'm a nobody, just a face in the crowd, nothing more.
I decided to ignore him and those girls, but it was nearly impossible since out of the corner of my eye I kept seeing him look over at me. We had only been in the water for just under an hour, but I really wanted to leave. "Hey, guys you ready to get out yet?" I asked. "No, why?" Maisie asked, I jerked my thumb in HIS direction and she understood. "You know, actually I am ready to go shower. Come on guys," she told Mac and Kno. God, thank you for giving me such amazing friends, I thought as we got our towels and walked back to our campsites.
