The rest of the week passed by in a blur. I cooped myself away in my room, not having the courage to look Dong Myeong in the face after all I've done. I ached to ask which hospital they took Dong Ju to so that I could phone in and ask how he was doing, but it felt all wrong. Everything felt all wrong.
Young Jo didn't come out not once during the remaining days of the week. My morale for breaking the curse diminished with every passing day, like a rock slowly eroding with the wind. I would chastise myself for not trying hard enough, for giving up too soon, and the silence of the hotel, of him, of myself reminded me of how futile my efforts have been. How they were more empty words of hope labeled as promises without any meaningful action to fill in their spaces.
It was evident I had failed. I had let him down, and he was going to suffer the consequences at my hands.
He could die, and it'd be all your fault.
The thought crowded my mind to the point where I couldn't stomach it anymore and brought up the two spoonfuls of rice I had for dinner.
My disheveled appearance seemed to morph in the mirror into something sinister, as if to represent the cruel manipulation that I could actually reverse the curse, and continued to laugh at me as if the simple thought of trying was comedic.
Through the crack in the door, I glanced at the dark underside of the bed. I wiped my lips and slumped atop the sink, eyes locked on the bed as my mind began to drift to notions about how lonely and disappointed he must be. I had nothing left to give up from my practically empty stomach then, but instead, hot tears fogged my eyes as if they were the only thing I could give him in place for the mistakes I've made.
"I'm sorry. . .," I didn't recognize my voice and was convinced that couldn't have been me. It was too distant, too weak.
"I'm so sorry."
