Dying Butterflies

As I watched your red pickup
drive down the never ending road
towards the cold, green table at which I sat
I stared and waited.

As I saw your headlights coming near
my stomach began to flutter
with wild butterflies
that happily danced.

When the long road
came to an end
I watched you get out
with the help of a loud squeaky door.
I stared off into the distance
as if I hadn't noticed
you were gazing at me.

I saw stars in broad daylight
when I looked into those chocolate eyes
and sensed all common sense
overtaken by my heart's desire.

Driving to the next town
you made me smile.
We giggled together
as we approached that street corner

We both jumped out of that truck
and waited on that busy street corner
while we stood and watched
the world fly by,
I found myself wrapped in your warmth.

Looking back now
it is hard to believe
that you and I
were just two crazy kids
learning how to love
in a world filled with pain.

Now I sit and watch the sun
slowly dying on the horizon
I feel the butterflies
as they begin to panic
becoming engulfed
into hot, red flames
as I feel them die.
