Friday morning came and I was a little more rested. I decided to get up a little early so that I could go in and leave a little early so I would have more time to get ready. With everything caught up I could just focus on building out the new account ledgers for some of our biggest client's recent business expansions and prepping for next week's month end work.

I ate lunch at my desk after grabbing a sandwich from the deli down the street. When I dug back into my work, I noticed that my boss had sent over an invite for the Department Head meeting in two weeks. The agenda was posted, and I read through it only to notice that one of the Department Heads was planning on retirement and they would be discussing succession planning. It didn't say which department, but I couldn't wait to learn more about how that process worked. By the time three thirty rolled around I was ready to go and popped into my boss's office to make sure he didn't need anything more before I head out.

"Hey boss, heading out early today. Do you need anything from me before I leave?"

"Sailor, actually would you mind coming in and shutting the door for a minute before you head out?" Doing as he asked, I pulled up a chair to his desk and opened my notebook in case I needed to take anything down.

"What's up Donald?"

"Our largest individual account has a problem that has the partners concerned. William Astor asked us to put together a dossier of his total assets, investments, business holdings and start to prepare a retirement plan for him. This is a big deal, he's not only the CEO of the largest Venture Capital group in the country but he owns this building and a fair amount of the commercial real estate in town. We cannot afford to have him lose faith in our firm as he is largest and primary revenue generating customer.

I was hoping you'd look at his accounts over the weekend to see if you can make sense of things? Or at least help us find a starting point? Basically, everything is off, significantly off but we cannot track it to one mistake. It looks like there are hundreds of mistakes going back over years."

"Oh my god, how could something like this happen. Don't we do an account review with him monthly?"

"Yes of course, however the person who's been compiling the review recently admitted he has been aware of this issue since he started last year and has been digging since then to try to figure it out and has been advised by the partner who hired him to not worry about it. Now that partner is on emergency medical leave and that leaves us holding the bag."

"Wow. Of course, I'll look, maybe I'll finally get to put some of the forensic accounting minor I have, to work. Do you want me to take home a company laptop this weekend?"
