An hour later I pull into my parents' driveway with Sailor and all her files in the passenger seat. We've called ahead and let my dad know we are coming and we wanted to review his accounts with him. I told him that Sailor has been working on something that appears to be serious involving his holdings. I notice Sailor is fidgeting and I can tell she is nervous. Honestly, I am too, but for different reasons. This will be the first time I've ever introduced anyone I've been seriously interested in to my parents and after our conversation yesterday it's kind of a big deal.
As we are getting out of my truck my parents open the front door and walk out to welcome us. I walk around and open Sailor's door and then take the box of papers from her hands so she can get out.
"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Astor," Sailor says looking them both in the eyes and shaking their hands even though her voice sounds a bit shaky.
"Welcome Sailor, please call us Bill and Helen," my mom instructs.
"Why don't you come into the library so we can sit down together and have some coffee and dessert while we talk."
"Thank you, Helen," Sailor smiles and I loop my empty hand around her shoulder and squeeze hoping she'll gain a little more confidence from my support.
My parents lead the way with Sailor behind them and me at the end. I notice Sailor looking around and taking it all in. My parents' house is a bit much to take in if you haven't been around extreme wealth before. The entry way alone has a chandelier the size of a small car and there is a gallery still lit with art all along the walls towards the library.
We sit down in the library which also doubles as my father's study. The room is probably bigger than Sailor's entire apartment and there are walls covered in books with multiple seating areas, desks and tables throughout the room. Connie comes in a moment after we do with a rolling tray of coffee, tea and desserts.
"Sailor, this is Connie," I introduce. "She is part of the family and takes excellent care of my parents."
"And you too Tahoe, you haven't lived on your own for that long," jokes Connie shaking Sailor's hand.
"Pleasure to meet you Connie," she says sitting down at the huge mahogany conference table in the center of one of the grouped seating areas of the room.
I put the box of papers to the right of Sailor on a chair and sit to her left and across from my folks. Connie sets each place settings with a coffee mug, a water glass and dessert plates. Next, she places a pot of coffee, most likely decaf, in the center of the table as well as a pitcher of ice water and a bottle of bubbly water for my picky father, and a huge cheese cake with strawberry drizzle in the middle, my favorite. Connie winks at me when I notice the dessert.
