It was nearly an hour later, but finally, everyone had arrived. Mike had been with Jessica, but the two decided it was time to go back. Mainly because it was so cold outside.
Mike held open the door from Jessica. "Thank you," She replied, walking past him. "Man, it's nice to be out of that cold."
"Tell me about it," Mike responded. "Come on, I bet the other's are here already."
The two walked into the main part of the lodge. And sure enough, lots of people were already there. Josh was crouching by the fireplace, trying to get a fire going. Matt was sitting on a chair, waiting for Emily to get back from wherever she was. Chris and Ashley were by the stairs, laughing to each other. Sam and (Y/N) were sitting on the stairs, talking to each other. Mike had always felt a little jealous, as Sam and (Y/N) were very close. He was surprised they hadn't started dating yet.
"What's up party people!" Mike grinned as he walked into the room.
"Heyyy!" Jessica said from behind him, waving a hand in the air.
The rest of the friends greeted them. "Make yourself at home, bro," Josh smiled at him, gesturing to the couch.
"Will do," Mike replied, headed to the couch. He sat down and Jessica did too, leaning into him. He put an arm around her shoulders. Mike glanced over at (Y/N), who smiled politely at him before continuing his conversation with Sam.
After a moment, Emily walked into the lodge. Her eyes landed right on Mike and Jessica. It pissed her off. She still had feelings for Mike. She was bitter that her bestfriend was dating her ex. It wasn't right. It was the reason the two weren't friends anymore. Well, there were other reasons, but that was the biggest one.
"Oh my God, that is so gross," Emily said loudly, making sure that Jessica heard it. She wanted Jessica to know how much she disliked her. "Are you trying to swallow his face whole?"
"Em," Matt said, standing up. He hated this. He always suspected that Emily still wasn't over Mike. This right now was proving it.
"Seriously," Emily continued, ignoring her boyfriend. "Can she be any more obvious?" The friends all quieted down and looked over to Emily and Jessica. Mike knew where this was going. He didn't want to be a part of this. "No one wants in on your territory, honey?"
"Excuse me?" Jessica asked, standing up. Mike didn't try to stop her. He just let her do it, mostly because he just didn't care. "Did you say something?"
"Oh, did you not hear me? Was your slutiness too loud?" Emily teased, a sly smile on her face.
"Sounds like someone's bitter she didn't make the cut," Jess said, looking back at Mike. Mike looked at Jess awkwardly, wishing he were somewhere else.
"Yeah, it's all a big cattle call with that dreamboat. Congrats, you're top cow!"
Mike looked over at (Y/N), who was intently watching the fight. He was shaking his head slightly, whispering something to Sam. Mike wondered what (Y/N) thought of him. Did he think Mike liked this? Did he think Mike was to blame? He wanted to tell (Y/N) that in truth, he hated this, but he knew he couldn't.
"You're such a bitch!" Emily said sharply, snapping Mike's attention back to the fight.
"Whatever," Jessica turned back to Mike, walking back to him. "I don't give a crap what you think."
"At least I can think. 4.0. bitch, honor roll. Suck on that when you're trying to sleep your way through a job."
"Who needs grades when you've got all the natural advantages you can handle-"
"Oh please..."
"You couldn't buy a moldy loaf of bread with your skanky ass."
"Are you serious? Do you think that's insulting?" Emily laughed. (Y/N) agreed with her. Emily was a lot better at insulting Jess than Jess was at insulting Emily. He wasn't on either side, of course, but it seemed like Emily was winning to him.
"That bitch is on crack or something!" Jessica said to Mike. Mike nodded slowly. He knew this fight was about him, but he still did not want to be part of it. He glanced back over at (Y/N). Their eyes met for a brief second before (Y/N) looked at Matt.
"Emily, stop!" Matt intervened. Why was she fighting so much? Matt knew it was because, deep down, she loved Mike. Not him. Mike. "This is out of hand. There's no reason to fight like this."
"Yeah, Em! Why you picking fights over your ex boyfriend? Huh?" Jessica taunted.
"Stop it!" Josh yelled. The group went silent as they looked at him. "This is not why we came up here. This is not... helping." (Y/N) felt bad for Josh. He just wanted everyone to get along. Why couldn't everyone just get along for the trip for Josh's sake? Was it that hard? "If we can't get along for ten minutes then maybe we need a bit of a break, right? Mike, why don't you check out that guest cabin. The one I told you about."
Mike nodded, standing up. "Yeah.. Yeah, alright." He started to leave, but Jessica stopped him.
"Hey, wait for me!" Jessica said.
"Actually, Jess, I, uh... I wanna cool off, you know?" Mike told her. Luckily, Emily was too focused on her bags to hear this, otherwise she would've had a field day. "Why don't you stay here for a little while...?"
Jess nodded, but was clearly hurt. "Yeah... Okay... Fine." She turned away, headed up the stairs to unpack her things.
Mike headed outside. He was hit with the chilly air. He leaned on the fence for a moment, taking a deep breath. He heard the door open behind him and he sighed. "Jess, I said-"
It was (Y/N). Not Jess. "Sorry, I can go-"
"No, it's fine. You're... You're good, man," Mike told him. He was actually glad (Y/N) was here. (Y/N) leaned on the fence next to him, looking at the view.
"That was... something, wasn't it?" (Y/N) said.
Mike smiled slightly. "Yeah. A real shitshow."
"Pfft, yup," (Y/N) chuckled. The two were silent for a moment. "So, uh... Do you wanna go the cabin?"
Mike blinked a couple of times. "Wait, really?"
"Yeah," (Y/N) smiled at him. He began to walk. "I think you need to clear your head from Jess and Em for a while."
Mike couldn't agree more. "Totally!" He hurried to catch up with (Y/N). He couldn't tell if (Y/N) was flirting with him, or just trying to be a good friend. He really hoped it was the first one.
